Marriage certificate in California.
Hi I am a Canadian citizen. I plan to have wedding in California next
year. I plan to get a marriage license from California license office a few days before wedding day and thus expect to get my marriage certificate after the ceremony . My question is that is this certificate recognizable by Canada? Thanks. If there is any official website about that , please let me know thanks TC |

I don't see a problem, although I am not certain. It'll be interesting when Canada legalizes same sex marriage, whether the US will recognize those. My inkling is that the US won't. It is not up to the "US", it is the jurisdiction of each individual state. jay Fri Jun 17, 2005 TC |

My question is that is this certificate recognizable by Canada? You need to check with the propper Canadian authorities. I married my German wife four years ago in Las Vegas. The German government would only recognize a marriage if it was a civil ceremomy, not a religious one. Then we had to have the Secretary of State for Nevada issue an Apostile which the German government would accept. Definitely check what the requirements for Canada are now, otherwise it might be possible that your marriage is invalid there. A second point, a few years ago an American friend living in Denver was going to marry a Canadian woman there who had some type of green card status in Canada. Immigration asked her the purpose of the trip, she replied marriage, and then they denied her entry into the US. So you should also consider the potential for having US problems also. George |

Most states currently recognize marriages from other jurisdictions even if the marriage wouldn't have been legal in the state in question. Currently this is typically applied to age restrictions, but it might get expanded to gender or potentially even polygamy. -- Prayer has no place in the public schools, just like facts have no place in organized religion. -- Superintendent Chalmers |

George Two Canadians visiting the US for the purpose of getting married doesn't create an immigration problem the way a Canadian citizen visiting the US to marry a US citizen does (not that it's a problem for us individuals; just our government). If visiting the US is denied for the purpose of marriage, then have your civil ceremony in Canada and have your spiritual ceremony in the US. So, make some phone calls and get the paperwork taken care of before you head south and you should have a great time and hopefully a great marriage. |
