Default Siem Reap & Angkor Wat Excursions

I am being quoted what appear to be ridiculous rates for side excursions
around Siem Reap. For two persons, I have the following:

Trip to Phnom Kulen Mountain - 10 hours - $260 for two persons.

Beng Mealea Temple and Banteay Srey Temples Tour - 9 hours - $280 for two
persons

Koh Ker, Prasat Thom and Ancient Temples Tour - 10 hours - $314 for two
persons

Angkor: Lost City and Temples - 10 hours - $265 for two

Total for above is over $1,100

While the next set of tours don't exactly match the first, a Vietnamese
agent has quoted the following for four days of activities for two persons:

Roluos and the Grand Circuit, all day

Angkor Thom and the Small Circuit, all day

Banteay Srei and Angkor Wat, all day

Phnom Krom and the floating village, all day

The cost is $616

If the going rate for a car is $25-$30 (8 or 10 hours?) and

The going rate for a guide is $25-30 a day

How much more could entry fees and lunches cost for these four days? It
seems that one could fare better providing one could find a good guide.

Do NOT book any of them. Arrange them locally on arrival.

I can only comment on Siem Reap and Angkor, but I don't see
why the others would be much different.

My relevant blog entries are he

Accommodation in Siem Reap can be very cheap; the excellent
Two Dragons guest house
http://talesofasia.com/cambodia-twodragons.htm I stayed at
was US$22per night for a single air-con en-suite room, you
can get cheaper if you shop around, possibly not better for
the price. Not 5* - but very comfortable.

My tour of Angkor involved pre-reading on the net and an
excellent guide-book from the guest house, then US$12 for my
personal tuk-tuk with driver, arranged at the guest house,
for the day. The tuk-tuk will seat two comfortably, four
with a squeeze. The driver was not a guide, but spoke some
English and knew all the sites.

A separate fee for guides applies if you use one, but it's
very modest. The site fee at Angkor was $20 per person for
one day; there is also a three-day pass available. Lunch at
the restaurants outside the front entry is cheap; I paid
less than $10 in the air-con restaurant; I later realised
the prices were cheaper and the food better in the others,
but I was a bit warm:-)

Carry US$; you don't need the local currency (4000 to the
dollar); you'll get quite enough in change as a souvenir.

Try he
www.auberge-mont-royal.com

Having already visited Angkor and sorting out our own GH and guides etc. We
took the easy option in 2007
We did the 3 day explore package - excellent value... we paid the driver
extra to visit Beng Mealea ( well worth a visit). Book a standard room -we
were told by other guests the deluxe rooms don't really offer extra value.
