That's a good thought. I know of Chez Panisse, of course, but have
never been there. It hadn't realized the ride was only 20 minutes.
Which Bart stop in Berkeley? How close is it to the Bart stop?

Downtown. The restaurant is about six-tenths of a mile straight up Shattuck Ave.

Is there any consensus on what the best restaurant in town is? If so,
which is it? Or if there are several contenders for that "best" title,
which are they?

I'm going to be visit the planet earth pretty soon and was wondering if
anybody could tell me what the very best spot on the planet was. Nothing
in particular, just 'best'.

And I don't want it to be hotter than the south pole; I'm particular that
way.

Well, it wasn't go to be my first choice, but given your constraint; I guess
I've got to go with the south pole.

Depends on what you want in a diner. North Beach Restaurant is always good,
but the service is not up to the Carnelian Room. For a great selection, the
Friday night buffet at the culinary academy is always good. Do you want a
place that you can drop the name of or a good meal? Do you want Italian,
seafood, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai?

If I had to choose one restaurant in the US to eat at for ever and ever, it
would be Chez Panisse. Not only that, but it's an incredible value.

If you absolutely insist on downtown, then go to Gary Danko. It is terrific and
memorable.

I perhaps should have mentioned earlier that we've been to Gary Danko
before, and enjoyed it. We wanted to try someplace else this time.

Since you've already been to Gary Danko, may I suggest Michael Mina on
Powell St., or if you have dined there too, try Aqua on California St..

What about that pretentious place that refuses to have any kind of
reservation system..obviously having such low respect for its patrons' time
that it insists that they stand in line-ups waiting for a table?

I have no interest in name-dropping. I want a good meal.

Yes, I do. I want them all. ;-)

But I know I can't have them all, at least not in a single trip.

KB Sushi is always good.

Something I would strenuously deny! I haven't had bad sushi in
San Francisco but I've certainly had sushi made competently but
with low quality fish in AYCE places around here. I was also
served escolar in a real sushi restaurant. Because of its
propensity to cause digestive upsets, it is banned in Japan.
Actually, it does taste very good but I certainly got a day of
the runs:-) I only found out about Japan later.
