We used an Airtel SIM card in Northern India in 2004, but it does not
really matter which operator you take - you essentially go to a retail
shop and buy the SIM card which is available.

You can check here how good the coverage is:
http://gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_in.shtml

Only for Bharat Sanchar there is a link to the coverage map (which is
not too bad for southern India).

For the other operators you could check the websites of the operators.

Indiamike is a pretty active forum about travel in India:
http://www.indiamike.com/
Maybe you can ask also there.
Type "sim card" in the search box and you'll get tons of threads about
GSM prepaid cards.

Thanks for the advice. Roaming with my European mobile would cost about 4
Euros/minute for national calls in India. I really do not understand how
somebody can invent such a prohibitive price beyond any reasoning...
