An afternoon in Mainz
I'll have a free afternoon in Mainz after a business trip to the
Frankfurt area and would appreciate recommendations for a site or two that I could visit. My main interests are history, music and (for lack of a better term) "oddities", i.e., unusual things that say something about the local character. I'm not so interested in the graphic arts. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. -- Boycott MCI/WorldCom for deliberately and knowingly hosting spammers: http://www.spamhaus.org/statistics/networks.lasso |

Mainz is a lovely town on the confluence of the Main and Rhine rivers and is
great for walking. There is an impressive cathedral and 3 baroque churches. There is the Gutenberg museum and a museum of Roman ships. Near the Dom (cathedral) there are interesting outdoor markets, and most of the city consists of pedestrian malls. "The Next Guy" wrote in message news:whH%e.189730$084.121627@attbi_s22... Thanks in advance for any suggestions. The Gutenberg Museum, particularly if you happen upon a group getting a tour and demonstration, as I did once with some students, certainly counts as history. The cathedral is nice. There are several nice museums, one very large. OK, I'm very much into history myself. 8-) -- Mary Loomer Oliver (aka Erilar) You can't reason with someone whose first line of argument is that reason doesn't count. (I arrived a bit late and didn't get a programme - in fact, there /wasn't/ a programme, but I didn't know that at first. So I spent the whole concert thinking "hmm...Liszt? No, that bit sounds more French, maybe Franck...but that reminds me of Messiaen...what /is/ this piece?" before realising the entire recital was improvised!) ---------------------------------------------- The poster formerly known as . |
