Hello All!

Is it beyond the wit of man to automatically switch off the motor and
put on the brakes when an engine goes thro' a red light?

When an engine goes through a red light does it get a ticket? How
about the rest of the car?

We are talking about railroads not highways!

Same concept. I heard a report that they suspect the engineer of
the commuter train might have been text messaging and not paying
attention to doing his job.

It sort of argues that engineers should only be backups for remote
controls. If railroad operation leads to the possibility of rear ending
by a following train, the stop signal transmitted to the train could
also activate another transmitter in the last car to stop any following
train.

England's Great Western Railway was doing more or less that in 1906.
(The system only sounded a warning and applied the brakes; it didn't
shut off steam.) However, this is a big and complex subject and not
really appropriate for a travel newsgroup.

Is there a news group where such things are discussed? I scanned
alt.railroad but did not see any discussion.

Grepping my newsrc I get:

alt.railroad.steam:
alt.railroad:
bit.listserv.railroad:
alt.models.railroad.n:
rec.models.railroad:

for just railroad. Likely others. Your troll for discussion and
answers, you don't sit back and passively wait for data to come to you.

On the switching, it's likely being discussed on comp.risks.
