In about 6 weeks, we leave for our Eastern Med cruise. I'm getting all
anticipatory.

Just thought I'd put it out there - Do you have any specific
suggestions on things to see or do, that AREN'T on the "Top 5" list
for these cities:

Venice (3 days),
Ravenna,
Corfu,
Bodrum,
Mykonos,
Rhodes,
Istanbul (overnight),
Athens (3 days)

Thanks!
Mark

Tom - I've been thinking of next year's vacations and we MAY be doing
another QM2 crossing in early July 2011 (Fly to Paris for a few days,
Eurostar to London, QM2 Norwegian fjord cruise followed by westbound
crossing)

We did a Med cruise last year but only did Venice and Athens from your
list. In Athens, we ate at a great restaurant near the Plaka called
Ouzeri Kouklis. You get lots of not so little plates of food and the
price was very reasonable. We had lunch there after visiting the Acropolis.

You'll be there for 3 days so presumably you'll be doing the Acropolis
on your own. A bunch of us from Cruise Critic got together and took the
subway there and found a tour guide for a tour. Our tablemates had taken
the ship's tour (I tried to convince them to come with us). We ran into
them at the Acropolis and they said "the tour is awful, we're going with
you". They ended up going to lunch with us and took the subway back to
the ship with us.

This is the only place I've been via cruise on this list. We did St.
Mark's square on our own. We also took the vaporetto all the way from
Piazza Roma to the Lido. I had a map with drawings of the various
palaces on it so I could keep track of where I was (and identify my
photos afterwards). The ship tour that I liked was the one to
Murano/Burano. My daughter recommends making a reservation for the
'Secret Passage' tour at the Palazzo Ducale (the one that is in
English).

Ravenna,
Corfu,
Bodrum,
Mykonos,
Rhodes,
Istanbul (overnight),
Athens (3 days)

Thanks Bill - I'll add it to the list.
Lee - Thanks, I had been wondering about that tour

As for the financial crisis and potential instability in Greece.
Y'know, if there are strikes, it's very much a part of the culture and
experience. (...and I realized that the hotel we booked on Syntagma
Square, across from Parliament, will certainly give us a "front row
seat" to any mass demonstrations, whether we like it or not)

Am I afraid for our personal safety? Of course not. Might there be
inconveniences or missed ports - perhaps. But - the more awkward the
experience the better the story afterwards! I also figure that we're
in a pretty good place. We're cruising on Crystal, which can provide
more flexibility for alternative arrangements and personal service
than can be provided by the fleets of mass market megaships. Also, the
Greek people depend upon tourism for revenue ...and they've been
finding ways to get around strikes and government crises for years.
Finally, we're pretty savvy travelers (with insurance and credit
cards).

In Athens take a ride over to the Temple of Poseidon ... It's a bit of
a ride but a pleasant one along tthe coast ... have lunch at whatever
seaside restaurant your driver recommends ... The views from the top
are amazing ...

Thanks, we've got a spare day after museums and ruins and a trip out
of Athens might be just the ticket!

Mark, I have an off the wall suggestion for you. Part of your reason for
wanting this cruise has to be the history lessons you learned in school.
Helen of Troy, King Tut, all the rest. If you could connect with a middle
or high school history teacher in your area, you could arrange to guest at a
class or two before the cruise to get a kids-eye view of the area you will
visit. After the trip, return to the school with pictures and stories. You
could make a great impression on a bunch of kids and enhance your trip.

As I get older, silly thoughts become my specialty. Have a great trip, my
sister took one like it last year.
