Thanks There is some shopping at the port. They have stores, an internet cafe, a restaurant, pharmacy, bars, rest rooms. The first time I was in Belize City, there were no stores, so the port has improved. You will notice the poverty in Belize City, but the people are nice. It is not a place to walk around, though, except for the shopping at the port. If you like diving, you may want to try that in Belize. They have the Blue Hole, there is Hol Chan Marine Park and Shark-Ray Alley. Instead of diving, you could do something different. I enjoyed cave tubing so much, I did it 2-3 times, and I will do it again if I go back to Belize.g They drive you out of town, and you get a quick tour through Belize City. You pick up an inner tube, then you hike 30 minutes through the Jaguar Paw jungle, then you go inner tubing, passing through a couple of caves. They have stalactites, stalagmites and lovely crystal curtains. You will have a head lamp so you can see inside the caves, and the lights will sparkle off the crystals. It was an awesome adventure. http://regtour.com/index.htm BTW, the hike through the jungle was interesting. It was full of hardwood trees, coconut trees, vines, epiphytes, fruit trees like guava and pineapple. We saw some leaf-cutter ants that were crossing the trail. Have fun on your cruise. Becca |

Thus spake "Buhwahaha" :

Thanks Not much to see "hanging around the city". You might do, as suggested, the cave tubing (don't use the cruise ship, 40 to 100 people is not my idea of fun). Or tour the zoo. Or do some diving. Although I have done it from shore (our trip was on the Wave Dancer, RIP), it's bee suggested to book this through the cruise line. You get picked up and dropped off at the ship. It's an all day affair. -- dillon Always get off the first shot. You may hit him and you're sure to throw off his aim. -- Lazarus Long |

Was just thinking about hanging around the city etc. Anything I shouldnt miss?? Thanks Most people fear Belize City. It's by far my favorite port. I love local art and artists. I love meeting interesting locals, etc... If I had to suggest something for someone to do though, I'd have 3. Shark/Ray Alley. The snorkeling and the sharks are awesome! Caye Caulker for the day. Grab a water taxi and walk around this beautiful little Caye. Take a trip out to Xunantunich. At the top of the pyramid, you can see into Guatemala and the rainforest is beautiful. It's a really interesting Mayan Site. LES! -- To email me privately, please remove YOUR CLOTHES OURCLOTHES If you experience.... .... lasting more than 4 hours... .... ALERT THE MEDIA!!!! |

Goffs Caye is a small football field sized island with nothing on it.
You can walk the entire island in about 5 mins. Surrounding the island is a reef. Snorkelling is wonderful here. Might be a nice change of pace from all your diving. I enjoy diving and snorkelling. Its a beautiful relaxing little Gilligan type island. |

WE were in Belize last year at this time. IT is still a "third world
country", and unfortunately for THEM will continue to be for many, many years. The people were GREAT.....PERIOD. The average hourly wage on our visit was $1.14; however, gas was $4.90 a gallon; therefore, very few vehicles (other than the tourist vans). Streets were dirt.....which turns to MUD when it rains. We would not return in our lifetime, but hope the very friendly people can turn things around for the future. |
