Notice how much martin tries and tries and tries

To cut down a bit on the road mileage, we were wondering if there were any ferries from southern France to Italy, either direct or with one connection. My map doesn't show any but it's 9 years old... None whatsoever. Ferries are fast going out of business on international routes - it's cheaper to fly! Until you factor in the cost of a hire car at the other end and how much you can carry if you travel in your own car. Cross channel routes appear to be booming. -- Martin |

I wonder how long it'll be before it'll be worth driving 2 days across Europe with no air-con with 2 screaming kids and grumpy wife staying in dives and getting stuck in the Stau on the Autobahn just to avoid the RyanAir Experience? Not long. -- Tim C. |

"tim....." wrote in message ... You said that you wanted to save the driving mileage. This option is never going to save you time tim True, but it's a trade-off between time, expense and effort. This trip is in the very early planning stage but it looks like two long days (or three easier ones) of riding to get there and then, of course, the same to get back. That's a big bite out of a two week holiday so I was casting around for other ideas. The optimum would be to teleport us and the bike to somewhere near Rome and then we could start from there. There are, however, certain practical difficulties T. |

... ... or you could do it per stop-over in Corsica or Sardinia ;-) Regards, Martin I looked at that but, as far as I can see, all the boats from France go to Corsica and all the boats to central or southern Italy leave from Sardinia. I'm sure there's a way to get from Corsica to Sardinia but the whole thing is getting to be more trouble than it's worth. T. |

... ... within France or Italy you can take trains. See my www.autoreisezuege.org/esummary.htm Regards, Martin Martin, Thank you for that site, it's now in my favourites list. I never even thought about trains. It looks like we can take an overnight from Auray to Lyon which puts us two hours from Italy and 8 hours from Rome early in the morning. Given that we have no definite destination in mind, I'm sure we can do something with that. Thanks again, Terry. |

My map doesn't show any but it's 9 years old... ..... but plenty of information on the net :-) According to http://www.belvedair.com/fr/transpor...t-Ferries.html for instance, there is one from Toulon to Civitavecchia - would allow skipping traffic mess around Genova ... but skips also the interesting Portovecchio - La Spezia area (leave highway for some great motorbike roads) Several ferries via Corsica and/or Sardegnia, but then imho no way not driving around at least N/NW coast (basically North of Porto) plus at least one trip over the mountains. Great roads and scenery, but chances encountering really crazy drivers :-) Corsica East coast is better in terms of sandy beaches, but boaring roads, South several nice small towns worth a short visit. For really saving time and mileage by using ferries, then its for a trip to Sicily (sailing at night). Friends used to drive by motorbike to Sicily and return by ferry, or the other way round. But have you considered train ? Several trains also carry motorbikes - but the ones I am aware of are mostly from/to Germany and Austria and Italy And some - usually small[est] - companies are offering bus services for passengers with motorbikes. Service might be availabe for motorbikers from Northern France somewhere south (?) Have a great trip! |

Depending on where you're going from, an overnight ferry or a drive from Holland to Hamburg or Düsseldorf and get the train to Verona (or get off the train at Bozen and hit the Dolomites for a day). -- Tim C. |

There's a car train from Utrecht to the S of France, BUT it costs an arm and a leg. None of them are cheap are they? :-( But you often get a good start for the next day, and saves hotel & fuel costs, and you can get a bit of sleep, even i fit's not as good as the adverts try and make out. I suppose that's their justification. -- Tim C. |

ferries from southern France to Italy, I'm not aware of any, unless they are ferries to Corsica or Sardinia. In a sense the mediterreanean ports of France are too close to, say, Genova (I'm not sure if a ferry Genova-Barcelona still exists, I took one more than 30 years ago) (despite the fact the train connections are rather awful), and I guess the traffic requests with the centre-south of Italy from France will be low. Which part of Italy (which is long) are you interested in ? Do you have any particular reason to skip the ligurian and thyrrenian coasts ? I knew there was a ferry from Palermo to Naples, and probably even Palermo to Genova (the latter should be later popular for truck drivers, I do not know about tourists). Some colleagues having to drive a car from Palermo to Munich with lot of computers and equipment took the ferry to Naples to cut a stretch of nasty roads. Anyhow this site http://www.traghettiweb.it/it/tw_index.php seems to have an interactive form, if you select a starting place it shows only a subset of destinations. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- is a newsreading account used by more persons to avoid unwanted spam.
