To go to Krabi instead would not have made such a difference. A parallel here to the crash in Suratthani a few years ago? It's probably an instance of "get-home-itis," which afflicts even airline pilots. There may have been tremendous pressure to land at the scheduled airport, too. This time it may have been "go Soi Bangla-itis" There is no Soi Bangla in Krabi. Now we know the pilot was Indonesian. It was reported that One-Two-Go recently replaced a number of European and Thai pilots with pilots from Indonesia and the Philippines in order to reduce staff costs. Well now we have seen the results of this. Indonesian airlines, especially Garuda are very accident prone, seem to have the worst record in the world. This particular pilot flew for a couple of very minor Indonesian airlines which have since folded. I for one, will avoid One-two-go in the future. I wonder if AirAsia employs the same type of pilots? From a booking and organisational aspect they seem to be more professional in my experience. I think at would be best to wait for the official accident report and not to speculate on the qualification of the crew. Helmut The "particular " Pilot as you refer to him certainly is well known in local aviation circles for all the wromg reasons Continued spatial disoroientation on a few approaches (once with a VIP onboard ) The FO on the other hand was a more than adequate pilot and had in fact been accepted by another airline . Will the investigation uncover the possability of a failed previous medical and a subsequent grounding of 12GOs Chief Pilot As Helmut states it is prudent and proper to await the proper outcomes of a correct investigation . But those witha bit of knowledge may care to examine study the pics of this accident now in the public domain . Look at the position of the flaps (flap setting) port Spoilers The reports of a loud bang may have been a compressor stall that would reduce their Toga response substantially on spool up The fact that the a/c appears to have contacted the runway at the 2000 foot marker but only slid 60 metres is another indicator that all was not well with this a/c and it may have just stopped flying at a critical phase of flight . What is concerning with this tragic incident is the culture of the airline involved. Example duty times and rest periods! Of course a company culture combined with crew members willing to disregard safety standards made this crash predictable. One Two Go disregards all Duty and Flight Time Limitations, required maintenance inspections and weather minimums. Again none of this can happen unless pilots are culpable and the controlling authority looks the other way. Such things as incredibly inept pilots given command , truly scary fuel saving techniques, Fatigue of both aircrew at the time will probably be a factor (if the logs and duty rosters have not been modified Thai style ) But may a big causal factor along with total inability to even comprehend the meaning of CRM let alone carry it out such as langauge and idiom differences within the flight deck enviroment. This is an accident that should never have happened my only surprise it took this long for it to happen Condolances to all affected by this sad incident including the reamaining staff begging aircrew to get them home safely . If it is found that the company culture caused this (even if mechanical failure and wx is is involved) the culture of the company probably contributed to it and those accountable and said to provide oversight including the Government officials must be charged and taken to trial .Otherwise the Kingdom may beocome an aviation pariah and uninsurable hulls could be flying pax about the skys . |

That doesn't change the fact that you don't try to land in in storm. There are lots of places in the world with changeable weather. If the weather is bad when you arrive, you wait or you divert, but you don't land. Now we hear that wind-shear was reported by other pilots landing there... |
