Default Colorado touring, prelim. planning.

We are at the very beginning of planning a trip to Colorado. We will
be there early Oct. for about 1 week. We like outdoors and definitely
would want to see Rockie Mountain NP. Other than that we don't know
much. Here are some questions.

1. We are driving from northern Calif. Should be take I-80 or Hwy 50
and catch I-70? We don't have any specific desire to see Denver, but
will if the route go thro the city.

2. Aside from Rockie Mountain NP, what other outdoorsy places would
you recommend?

3. Any other great sights to see? Esp. non touristy places?

4. We may also want to get in some cultural things, such as plays or
musical events.

TIA.

Well I-70 will take you close to Moab and Arches/Canyonlands but that's not
Colorado even though the hiking and the country is good. Mesa Verde is
worth a visit (yes, I know it's touristy but if you stay the night in the
park or get in early you can avoid many of the people - even by midday in
October I didn't feel anywhere near overwhelmed).

1 week isn't very long, and it takes a full day to drive N CA to CO including
driving at night. The loss of an hour due to time zone crossing into UT
doesn't help.

The problem crossing NV and UT also means that you have to be willing
NOT to stop as that cuts in CO time. That leaves out Salt Lake, Moab
and the numerous UT Parks and Monuments which are time consuming side
trips. And Great Basin and other NV sights.

Oh numerous:
Boulder, Boulder Canyon, Xxxxx, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs (Garden
of the Gods), Glenwood Springs, Telluride, Crusty Butt, A-Rock-a-hoe
(Continental Divide).
Mt. Evans will be closed. I think Pikes will also be closed by Oct.
CO Springs. Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Silverton, Durango, Grand Junction,
the Great Sand Dune.

And never forget Vail. Anyone visiting Colorado HAS to visit Vail. (3.0)

3. Any other great sights to see? Esp. non touristy places?

These are all touristy places.
They are all for people planning trips to Colorado...
who like the outdoors and definitely who don't know much and are looking
for non touristy places.

Late season and not outdoorsy. Days are short.

I can't remember how many times I've done this drive, but at least 3 and
I've taken now to flying there and getting a car instead.

And I still have not gotten around to getting up Longs Peak (except to
the base of Chasm Lake, but I have done a number of routes on the Flat
Irons as well as ski trips).

The last time I went to Boulder, I think I met with at least half a
dozen people from the net over dinner. Maybe more. Went climbing with 2.
Not touristy.
