Reno is convenient to Tahoe for skiing, and it's far cheaper than anything at Tahoe, including the fleabag little motels on the north and south shore.

We stayed at a smallish motel in Kings Beach on the north shore a few years ago. Reasonable September rates...right on Lake Tahoe. Jacuzzi in private room that you could lock the door with jets that would blow your socks off, so to speak. What more do you need?
