Default Why are laptops singled out?

Has any terrorist or otherwise unsavory airline passenger ever disguised a
weapon or explosive device as a laptop?

I have heard that laptops are singled out because of financial liability.
If that's the case, then isn't it safer for the laptop to remain in its snug
case? Why then are laptops selected at random for explosive material
swabbing?

Wondering what the official mentality is regarding laptops.

My understanding is laptops block the view of OTHER things in the bag.

Because you can put a LOT of C4 in a laptop case vs. a walkman or
Ipod, and
the circuit board and other wires obscure the view.

it's because the batteries are large enough to conceal "something" and since
they are radio-opaque (don't pass x-rays) they COULD conceal "something"
