Default Laptops in carry for domestic flight?

Are laptops permitted as carry ons for domestic US flights? If not, what
happens to them?

Thanks,
Brett

Yes, they're permitted. They must be removed from your carry
on and x-rayed separately.

of course. only an idiot would put something that delicate in
checked baggage.

a computer will have to be unbagged and xrayed separately; you
may have to demonstrate that it starts up normally.

That seems to have disappeared in the days of the TSA, in my experience.
All they've cared to do is scan mine.

They're often also swabbed for explosives residue. This involves
security wiping your laptop with a small cloth and then placing the
cloth in an explosives 'sniffer.' Whole exercise takes maybe 30
seconds, 60 seconds if they do the handles of your laptop bag too.
