Default 10,000 bags misplaced at [British] airports

Following up to Oral-B

The 2nd paragraph of the same article says they are
piled up at the airport waiting to be delivered back to their owners.

nice if they include those people who had to put car keys etc in
the hold luggage

I seem to remember reading that even the draconian measures of
the UK did not prohibit passengers from carrying keys, but they did
prohibit the carrying of key fobs.

electronic keys, like most modern cars have.

Why would they put their keys in the hold luggage?

My car has a remote that can be used to open the doors, but so can the
key. The key itself contains a chip, but my understanding is they were
stopping from bringing keys like this.

I think saying they are 'misplaced' or 'missing' is a bit of journalistic
licence of the truth. The 2nd paragraph of the same article says they

Misplaced is literally correct, as is temporarily missing. But if your
vacation was ruined due to misplaced luggage, you'd be ticked.

I'm curious. How is your vacation "ruined" by misplace luggage?
Inconvenienced, I'd understand.

Do they not allow you to carry on keys?

Keys yes, but not electronic key-fobs.

So in the case of a car you can maybe unlock it, but can't switch off the
alarm.

Frank

Depending on where you sepnt your holiday it's not too much fun when all
your clothes, camera, books and stuff are gone. Yes, you can go and buy new
clothes at your destination and try to claim back the money later.
Depending on where you go the choice might be very limited (should be funny
if you booked one of them fancy tiny islands in the Maldives with no
shopping opportunities).

Regards,

Frank

SO, don't turn on the alarm. No one in the airport car park is going to
care if it goes off.

Where do people in the Maldives get their clothing?
How much clothing do you need for the Maldives?

To clarify, the restriction was on electronic key fobs.

Which *all* cars made in the last 10 years or so have, in a sense, as
they are required by UK law to be fitted with an immobiliser which has
a transponder in the key.

Not all of them contain batteries - only the "active" remote-type ones
- but then no USB sticks contain batteries either and those were
banned.

Given the impact of losing such things, might it not have made sense to
X-ray them then require them to be handed in to the flight crew before
the flight? They're so small that they could contain only a tiny
amount of explosive, and I understand the restriction was so they
couldn't be used to set off a bomb in hold luggage.
