Has anyone ever been to Newfoundland? What was it like?

I was there for a long weekend last summer to attend a friend's wedding.
Didn't have much time to do the sights because there were so many parties
and get-togethers due to the wedding but one impression that does stick out
in my mind is that the people there are extremely friendly - to the point
that it's worth taking the trip just to meet and hang out with some of them.

I've only been to St. John's, a wonderful town to visit (we were at a
conference). It's very quaint, the houses are painted bright colors, and the
people are super friendly. Looks like they do a lot of partying in summer.
I'd love to visit the area for a longer period.

We made our first trip to Newfoundland in 2003.
We made our second trip to Newfoundland in 2005.
We've already bought tickets to return in 2006.
Those facts may imply a positive answer to your question.

What the others have said about the friendliness of the people is true, but
probably to a greater extent than you can imagine.
The music is great and that was, for us, the first attraction.
Besides the people and the music, there is also some awesome scenery. To
get an idea of the scenery, you're invited to visit photo albums from our
first two trips:
2003: http://shorock.com/nfld/2003/photos/
2005: http://shorock.com/nfld/2005/

I've been in 49 states, 8 Canadian provinces + 1 territory, and some of
Mexico. So far, Newfoundland is tops in my book!

We have never driven there, preferring to spend as much time there as
possible. Both times we flew to YYT (St. John's).
Flights there are relatively high priced. However, relatively low expenses
for lodging make it an affordable place to go.
The hotels are a bit pricey; the motels we've tried have been below par; the
bed-and-breakfasts are the way to go: reasonably priced and they give you
much more of the flavo(u)r of this former nation.

Yes. It's fantastic --- the people, the culture, the scenery (especially
Gros Morne), the icebergs, the music. Oh, and did I mention the people?
Great!. What would you like to know?

Thanks....I think that you have answered all of my questions.

Sincere appreciation to all who responded (and who passed on some beautiful
pictures!)

Shawn

I understand that Memorial University in St. John's also has accommodations
for about $30 per night in their dorm's. Here is the site:

Thanks,
