The ones where red lights are visible are facing away from you. The ones
with white lights visible are facing towards you. Is it different in the
USA ?

those hummer things have orange lights across the top front, so i
would guess in US its quite hard to tell from lights quite what you
are looking at

Aided by the fact that the drivers are pretty unsure which way they're
going as well?

and its so wide its on both sides of the road! :-)

Like boats, do they have different coloured lights on either side ?

I think the US test is pretty basic

There is no "US" test. Each state has its own.
