Default Sound quality: download vs CD

There is no actual encoding when writing an audio file to CD assuming
that it is at the same sample rate and bit depth (44.1kHz/16bits) so
the only loss occurs during the original lossy compression. You should
get a bit-perfect match between the decompressed audio data and what
gets burned onto the CD.

Apologies, yes I should think that is so (though it is still less good than
a purchased CD without lossy compression). The problem is worst when you
then want to re-rip, say to MP3 or even to another iTunes, because then you
get a worse result than the original AAC.

Thanks but no apologies needed. Note, however, that there is no reason
why a burned CD should not sound as good as a replicated CD assuming
that good media is used and it is burned properly. There is a valid
question about how well burned media will hold up but at least
initially there should be no difference in quality. In some cases,
burned CDs will actually have fewer errors than replicated CDs. In both
cases, the playback will still be free of errors given the inherent
error correction provided.
