Default Car Rental in Waikki Beach?

Hi all

On the advice of many at the newsgroup we are renting a car (part of
our package) for entire stay on the big island. I still am not sure if
we will need a car while on Oahu or not. In any event I did not book a
car for that part of our vacation. I however have been looking for
rental car locations that might be near our hotel, the Aqua Waikki
Wave. I just did a search of the Hertz website and have discovered
that may of the hotel locations are for guests of that particular
property. Any other suggestions for rental car locations near our
hotel.

Thanks
Michael

You'll find plenty just walking around
You don't really need a car and sometimes free parking is difficult to find.
If you park in front of the zoo, it's not expensive though.
If you're lucky, free parking along the canal.

I know the Big Island well and to see the really interesting sites there
(on your own not part of tours) a car is necessary. Depending how long
you will be there (more than three days or so) I would recommend "The
Big Island Revealed" as an excellent (driving) travel guide.

On Oahu it is not so necessary. - Traffic can get VERY congested during
the rush hours on the H1 and on the main streets - then there's parking.
There is an excellent bus service in Honolulu, as well as some free
shuttle buses that take you directly to sites like the Ala Moana mall.
Even a bus or a cab to Diamond Head is better than a rental car. A bus
can take you to Hanauma Bay - well worth visiting (small park fee). But
to see the sites outside of Honolulu it is nice to have a car - drive to
Pali lookout, Valley of the Temples, North Shore, Dole "Plantation"
Tourist Center, etc...

You'll need one if you to go out of that area and there are a number
of places you might be interested in and we also just enjoyed driving
around. There is a bus system but I'd imagine it would be much slower
than driving.

Traffic gets thick in and around Honolulu. If you want to see the other
parts of Oahu, have you considered staying some place other than Waikiki or
even Honolulu? Drive in once, not trying to get out several times. I stayed
at Waikiki once, will never return, though I might stay on the windward side
of Oahu. Waikiki and Honolulu are not what I go to Hawaii for.

Although I've visited Hawaii several times, I've never stayed on Oahu
at all (only the big island, Maui and Kauai). We have an upcoming trip
to Australia probably flying out of Los Angeles), and I was thinking
of breaking up the long flight by staying on Oahu, two nights in each
direction.

Given that we'd be there for only two nights (probably only little
more than one full day) and won't have time to see very much of the
island, do you have any recommendations as to where to stay?

Well, we liked our stay at Turtle Bay. But we had a rental car. You could
stay up north on the windward side with a car on one pass-through and in
Honolulu without a car on the other. There are buses around the island but
with only a day the schedule might limit you too much.
