no, they come to the US because we, the 'plain' youroepeenz, send them
there (hoping they don't make it back home).

Actually, we first tried to dump them in a facility near Bordeaux, but
found out later that Manhattan or Miami have a somewhat higher
attractiveness to their eyes, so we're able to dump them there with
consderably less effort. And they spoiled the Bordeaux wine, too.

{ snip }

the march to the front of the line is also typical -- more than once we
have joined with Brits and other Americans in lines to block Italians
from simply bullying their way ahead [Japanese tourists will also jump
lines routinely]

TBH, the French do this, too, albeit less. When I first came to France, I
recall standing in my bank in Lyon, and having a conversation with the bank
employee, whilst the next customer leaned against the counter, three or
four inches from my elbow, unabashedly listening to your conversation.
This is so commonplace, that most banks and post offices will now have a
sticker on the floor, or a sign, asking customers to respect the 'ligne de
discretion'.

Alas! Those are the only Europeans left who _have_ money, since it's
impossible to become rich by earning it in Europe today.

So I go to the Vatican Museums one morning, shortly before they open.
The line is already several blocks long. Just as I reach the end and
get in line, a Japanese teenage girl runs up and crowds in front of
me. No big deal; I don't say anything. The line continues to grow
behind me. Then AN ENTIRE TOUR BUSLOAD OF JAPANESE TOURISTS,
including the driver, arrive and join the girl in front of me. She
had been sent ahead to hold a place in line. I was furious, but there
seemed to be nothing I could do about it -- except devote myself to
writing e-mail messages about how RUDE Japanese tourists are!!

Huh? Thousands of rich young Dutch people here in Amsterdam who got rich by
working hard, or having a creative idea for a business.

Interesting: I assumed when you opened with "it's the term we
use...", that you were European.

It's the term Europeans use to describe the same people when they're on
their home turf, as well (Monaco springs to mind).

As to the "coming to the US" to behave that way, I think you've
misunderstood the situation: it's a world thing rather than a
US/Europe thing.

EuroTrash behave like that at home, and abroad. People in all places
call them all the time on their behaviour, but they're rich enough (or
at least Daddy is rich enough) that they don't pay any attention.

They're not too bright: well-funded, but not too bright. (If she
hadn't died, the dear departed Princess of Wales would be the grande
dame patron of Euro Trash by now.)

Please! Until I joined this group I had never heard the term and
I have never heard a European use it. What does it refer to?

There was a book, decades ago (1950s, perhaps?), called 'The Ugly
American'. Most of those who (mis)use the term, have never read the book.

It was also the title of a film by George Englund, starring the sublime
Marlon Brando. 1963 or 1964, IIRC.

What are you doing in here Desmond?

As I'm fortunate enough to be a European, Dave, whilst you're a
beer-swilling, women-groping, fly-infested Australian, I might ask you the
same thing.

fx: looks at headers and sees cross-posts

Oops.

Besides ... I was here first. :-P

Does anyone have any anecdotes relating to this? Who *are* the world's
worst tourists?

Pretty much any nationality travelling in a big organised group, where
they hang their brains up like their coats as soon as they meet the
tour leader. "Haha, we'll be looked after and have our arses/asses
wiped for us. Responsibility ends here!" The herd mentality then takes
over.

Or any nationality traveling independently, who thinks he/she is morally
superior to others simply because of the method of travel.

Or any nationality who judge other with broad strokes.

The above observations apply mainly to Brits and are the result of
working with tour-groups over a period of 4 years. To illustrate:

Me (on walking tour of wherever): "Please leave a gap so that people
doing their shopping can get past you."

(May as well talk to a brick wall).

Punter (angrily): "Why don't they accept pounds here?"
Me: "Does your local newsagent accept Euros?"

And so on and so forth.

And yes, individual travellers can be just as ignorant.

FWIW, the best behaved tour groups I've worked with have been Germans.
