Thanks to all for your help.

Any tips on things to do at these ports. We plan to just explore in Key
West and see what the day brings us - I hear there is a Margeuritaville.
We have a VW Beetle rented in Cozumel to visit some sites. My wife would
like to visit one of the ruins.

Thanks Again!

We are going on a short cruise on the Carnival Destiny next week - with
stops in Key West and Cozumel. Have not had any vaccinations. Any
advice on what to do or not do. Is there anything I can get in the
short term?

TIA

Key West, Conch Train tour. Cozumel, check with your home location auto
insurance agency. Ensure that you are totally covered in Mexico for car
rental. I can almost guarantee that you will not be covered. Most Credit
cards don't cover you either. Purchase or at least check about Mexican
auto insurance with plenty of coverage for collision, comprehensive and
bodily injury before your trip. If your home auto insurance company can't
provide appropriate documentation that you are covered or provide that
service find a company that can. You may need it.

I wanted to reinforce the concern on car insurance in Mexico. There are
some bad stories of people having problems driving in Mexico. Check with
experts before you go. I spent 30 years in the casualty insurance business
and Mexico was a definite yellow flag. The US companies were OK but the
Mexican authorities could refuse to accept a US policy and require you to
deal with a Mexican company. It may be different now, or not.

In Cozumel, we like San Francisco Beach, it is adjacent to Playa Mia,
but Playa Mia now charges a day pass. I like the swimming pool at San
Francisco Beach, the food is good and they have clean rest rooms. They
offer parasailing. If you eat or drink, use a credit card to get the best
exchange rate.

Check out the beach maps here, and this map is clickable. Just scroll
down until you see the map.

Cozumel is one of my favorite places. We go to the American Pharmacy on
3rd Street South (Calle 3 Sur), across the street from Pizza Hut
(they do not sell codeine or barbiturates, but you can buy Rx medication
over the counter). You never know if you will need a pharmacy when
you travel. One time, I left Advair, my inhaler at home. :-(

http://www.gocozumel.com/pharmacy/

There is an internet cafe about two doors down, that charges $3 an
hour. It is the Info Business Center (do not use the coffee house across
the street, it is pricey). Near them, is the Shampoo Beauty Parlor that
does typical salon services, along with manicures, pedicures and full
body massage. Some of these businesses, and others, are on this page:

http://www.cozumelinsider.com/Services

Mini-golf is fun, especially if you cruise with friends and family. It
is a tropical location, they have iguanas and beautiful birds. Beer is
$2, soft drinks and shots are $1 and golf is $7 (prices may have
changed). Check out their photos.

If you get hungry, get away from the main street to find some good,
local Mexican food. The Mission is a nice buffet, but they do not speak
English very well.

Another place is the San Miguel Cafe, but they just changed their name.
They are on Avenue 15, between Calle 2 and 4. It is right up the street
from mini-golf. From the main street near the cruise ship, the Avenues
are 5th Avenue, 10th Avenue, 15th Avenue.

Keep in mind, there may be a time difference, so some of the stores and
restaurants may not be open if you go early. Be careful where you park,
because they will tow your car.

Have a wonderful cruise.

You should not need vaccinations for either destination. I have never
been to Key West, but if is in the US, so you should be fine. I have
been to Cozumel many times and on a land trip to Cancun(very nearby) and
never needed any vacination.

In Key West, maybe a tetanus shot in case you get scratched by a
Hemingway cat or run across a rooster in a foul (or is fowl) mood. Other
than that you should be good to go.

For those of you thinking about more exotic places, the US Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention has a useful website at
http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/

I second the need for a tetanus vaccination if you haven't gotten one
in the last 10 years - and probably want you want is TDaP - Tetanus,
Diphtheria, Pertussus.

And if you are in your sixties or have any kind of breathing problem,
a pneumonia vaccine wouldn't be a bad idea - ask your doctor.

There is a ruin on Cozumel in the park at the south end near the
lighthouse down there (which has a museum and you can climb it if you
like). There's also good snorkeling there, and a crocodile reserve
(not in the same place). But the ruin is not as tall as I am. I
think for more significant ruins you'd have to go somewhere off
island.

As for Key West - yes wandering down Duval Street is fun. And the
Conch Train takes about 2 hours. If you are there at sunset, you can
go to the Mallory Square festivities.

For the more significant ruins such as Tulum, I would go with a ships
excursion. If you go on your own and get back to the ship late, it will
not wait for you. If you are on a ships excursion, the ship will wait
for you no matter how late you are. IMO the ships excursion is worth the
money for something like this that is a distance away.

Personally, I wouldn't do Mayan ruins from a ships tour at all.
Cozumel's a nice place with plenty to offer - it just isn't ruins. If
I wanted to see Mayan sites, I'd go to Belize (and you can do an
excursion from there to Tikal for a couple of days). Or I'd just do a
land vacation in Mexico to near where Tulum or Chichen Itza, because
the tours from the boat seem much too exhausting. (and expensive)

He said they already had a jeep rented anyway so unless they get out
of the rental, they won't be taking the ships tour or any tour to
Tulum.

I did tolum in the middle of march 2003 and it was very hot and humid.
The tour bus had somebody on a very loud PA trying to sell calendars.
He didn't shut up for the entire drive which was 45 minutes IIRC.
I spent most of that drive with my hands clamped over my ears trying
to block him out.
We stopped halfway at some tourist trap, but it wasn't half bad and
there actually was something I bought there.
The ruins where OK. The view off the cliff was spectacular.

Yes, I've been on a ship that had to delay our departure from
Cozumel because the tour was late getting back.
