Default Trip to USA

We are from Spain, we are planning a trip to USA during the first two weeks
of August.
We want to visit New York, Las vegas, Gran Canyon, Yosemite park and San
Franscico.
We have booked our tickets from spain to New York, but not the domestic
airtickets of USA. Are we going to find tickets if we buy it one or two
days before the trip in August? for example if the 1st of August we want
to buy 2 tickets from New York to San francisco for flying the following
day?

And what do you thing of our trip? do you think we have a nice route?

Thanks,

What's the reason for waiting till you are in the US? Can you not book
while you are in Spain. The tickets are a lot more expensive if you want to
book too close to the departure date. It's cheaper if you can book at least
2 weeks ahead.

And what do you thing of our trip? do you think we have a nice route?

Thanks,

Pretty interesting places, but for my personal opinion a bit to much.

Anyway ... don`t wait to long with booking flights. The closer You get to
the actual travel dates, the more difficult it becomes to get flights at a
reasonable price (if any).

Second thing ... if You book from Europe, You might have better consumer
rights, in case You need them (assuming You use an airline that is doing
business on both sides of the atlantic).

You'll be able to get them but they'll be a _lot_ more expensive than they
would be if you were to book them at least two weeks in advance. Also make
sure to shop around and use sites like Expedia, Priceline, Travelocity, etc
as they've almost always got better prices than you'll find when you deal
directly with the airlines.

Overall your schedule looks possible, but keep in mind that you will
need most of a day to get from New York to Las Vegas. They are quite far
apart. From LV you are better off driving to the Grand Canyon. The only
major airport near it is Phoenix, and that is almost as far away from it
as LV. There may be local flights to Flagstaff, but even that is a
couple of hour's drive.

You will be visiting Yosemite at its peak season, so you will want to
reserve accommodations about now. It will also be very crowded, and will
have really bad traffic problems. Again, you will have to drive there,
probably from San Francisco. As an alternative, consider visiting some
of the other sites near Grand Canyon, such as Lake Powell, Painted
Desert, Petrified Forest, Monument Valley, the Navajo and Hopi Nations,
Canyon de Chelly, Meteor Crater, etc.

Yes, but two weeks is not much time for it. The trip from San Francisco
to Yosemite, Las Vegas, and the Grand Canyon is about as far as going from
Vigo to Valencia. You will spend several days driving, and you also want
to spend time in each of the places.

One way to cut down the driving time is to get what is called an open-jaw
return air ticket. You would fly from New York to Las Vegas (or perhaps
Phoenix), drive to the Grand Canyon and the other places, finish in San
Francisco, and fly back to New York, booking the two flights on the same
ticket.

However, you will probably be trading cost for time if you do this. The
open-jaw air fares may be higher than for returning from the same city,
and the rental car companies will certainly charge you extra (usually
called a "drop fee") for returning the car in a different place. It's
your decision.

One more point: New York has more than one airport. Presumably you will
be spending time there either at the beginning or end of the trip -- you
don't want to be changing airports the other time. Try to book your
western flights using the same airport you arrive from Spain at. But if
the cheapest flights are from a different airport, you again face a cost
tradeoff.

Those are all nice places to visit. You're packing a lot into
2 weeks, but with a little planning you should be able to at
least see the highlights in those places.

* First you'd spend several days in New York. It's a very big city
so do some careful planning first so you can make good use of
your time.

* Next, fly to Las Vegas (try to get a direct flight, naturally). Maybe
spend 2 days there to see the major casinos, see a show, etc. If
you have time, visit nearby Hoover Dam . To see some western
scenery, drive to Red Rock Canyon or the Valley of Fire, if time permits.

* From Vegas you could travel to the south rim of the Grand Canyon.
You could rent a car and drive (it's about 5 hours each way), or
take a tour bus, or fly there in a helicopter or small plane. (The Grand
Canyon has an airport, but it's just for small planes.) It's possible to
do it as a day trip, but it's much better to spend the night there and
return to Vegas the next day. Be warned that the Canyon will probably
be very crowded in August.

* You could visit either San Franciso or Yosemite next, depending
on how you want to plan your route. If you want to visit Yosemite
first, you could drive there from Vegas (about 7 hours), or I think
there are also flights available (but I think the airports near Yosemite
only handle smaller planes.) OR you could fly to San Franciso first,
and travel from there to Yosemite when you're ready (about a 5 hour
drive from San Francisco).

* San Franciso is a great city so allow yourself several days. There's
also a lot to see nearby if time permits, such as the wineries of
Napa Valley to the north, the stunning Pacific coastline to the
south, etc.

* Try to book your flight so that you can fly home directly from San
Franciso, rather than having to return to New York first.

I'm jealous. That's a cool (nice) trip, and IMO, quite doable.
You may have figured this out, but here's how I'd do it:

After touring NYC, I'd fly R/T to San Fran. While in SF, you
do Yosemite (4 hr. drive), then fly R/T to Vegas (cheaply, if
you book ahead). From Vegas, tour the Canyon (5 hr. drive).
Fly back from Vegast to SF, then to NYC.

While in San Fran, I'd do day trips N. to Napa Valley wineries
and S. to Monterey (Aquarium) and Big Sur (beaches). Then
go to Yosemite for a few nights (you need reservations to stay
in the Park). In Vegas, you could sign up for a group tour to
the Canyon. [Roger B.]

-- I tried to book some similar flights while in Australia earlier in the
year and had some trouble because my CC didnt have a US mailing address.
Couldnt book at Expedia, OneTravel or Travelocity. Could book at Jetblue's
(New York/Vegas) web site but not ATA's(San Fran/New York). Had to ring
them. Those airlines were the cheapest for flights between the cities I
mentioned.
