Default Cruise ships leave Bermuda in a hurry

http://tinyurl.com/9g4mj

From Bermuda's Royal Gazette, Thursday 09/08 -

"All cruise ships docked in Bermuda were forced to leave in a hurry last
night as Hurricane Nate approached the Island, leaving many visitors
wondering where the next stop would be, and some unaware they were even
leaving."

Isn't it funny when people cruise during hurricane season they act really
surprised if they are "inconvenienced" because the Captain wants to spare
their butts by not letting them get tossed around!? They ought to go
through a real storm at sea and see how they would like it! Been there,
done that!

I was on the Voyager OTS when we were forced to leave a day early. Realize
that this was only a 5 day cruise with 2 scheduled days (1 night in port) --
and we were there for 5 hours.

We've all heard the rants and threats of lawsuits through the years from
cruisers irate at itinerary changes, and I fully expected to hear much of
the same. However, to my amazement there was nothing of the sort. On a ship
with over 3000 pax, I heard nothing stronger than understandable
disappointment, ...and of the many people I talked to, their experience was
the same. (Quite a contrast to the behavior 14 days earlier when the ship
diverted to Canada)

After Katrina, evidently everyone realized that:
- hurricanes aren't to be messed with
- in comparison to the tragedy in New Orleans, bitching about missing a few
hours in Bermuda would be beyond petty.

What a welcome perspective.

....and I have a review brewing which I hope to get on paper (electrons?)
soon.

(In short, the theme will be "ch...ch...ch...changes" and deal with the VOS
and the wider changes in cruising over recent years. I LOVED the Royal
Promenade, hated nickel and diming, enjoyed the traditional seating, loved
the ice show despite/because of it's inconguity, and still don't know what
to make of the production shows)

Was this announced before folks went ashore...did everyone make it
back on board?

The Captain announced before we went ashore that he wanted
everyone back on board before 5:30P -- and explained the reasons.

Sometime after 6:00 we were informed the ship would be headed to
St. George to pick up some guest that didn't make it back to the
ship in time. Sometime after 7:00P some of us got a "thrill"
show of watching 4 people (2 women, 2 men, I believe) jump from
the pilot ship onto VotS's ladder. The sea was very rough and I
was quite impressed that they all were willing to make the leap
-- not to mention keeping their stomachs in check.

The gossip going around the deck was that at least two of the
tardy passengers had children on board. Of course the gossip
changed every time I heard the reasons. However it does make
some sense for the ship willingness to be delayed so long and the
passengers willingness to take the risk.

The next day I ran into the Captain on the stairs and I couldn't
resist asking what penalties the tardy passengers received
(namely from St. George's port). The Captain wouldn't give any
information on that, but did talk about how the group had
received a police escort from King's Wharf to the St. George port
-- to which he was grateful.

I see your question has been answered -- but I have one more addition...

When we were discussing the "left behinds," we realized that it was a great
benefit of the newish ID card electronic check in and check out systems
which let the ship crew know exactly who is still ashore.

As a further aside, I'm surprised that the word got out to as many pax as it
did. The Captain's announcement was broadcast in the hallways, but unless
you had the announcements and muzak audio (unrelated to the TV) turned on
in the cabins, you could have missed it (a number of fellow passengers we
talked to that morning indeed, did miss the announcement) I saw no signs or
notices on the in-cabin TV. Needless to say, it was a discussed widely
ashore at the Dockyards.

I've just read a review from NCL Crown which was there at the same
time

The review says:

!We all woke up in Hamilton [second day] and the announcement from
!Hamilton with us, were leaving early too.* Everyone we talked with
!was disappointed, but we all understood the reason.* The original
!cruise we booked, RCL’s VOS, only stayed a few hours versus 2 days.*
!I felt lucky getting two days

!.. we pulled out at 6 pm.* There was a tropical storm warning and a
!hurricane watch for Bermuda as we left. The seas were pretty choppy
!the rest of the night, so we all pooped out at 9 pm We sat out at
!sea the next three days.* I overheard some people asking why we
!could not try another port or try going back to Bermuda after Nate
!passed. Some people even wanted cabin credits.
