My report on the matter was submitted to my government some ten years
ago and it had influence on some immigration policy changes that took
place about that time. Yes, the increased difficulty in bringing Thai
girlfriends to this country is partly because of my report. What I saw
was what anyone with their eyes open could see quite readily. Anyone who
has lived in Thailand for a great length of time (as Schweik professes),
and doesn't isolate themselves within western enclaves, will see more
than enough. I spoke with many journalists, foreign and Thai, maybe even
Schweik, during my project in Thailand so I know that to be the case.

One of the most interesting people I met was a medical researcher
heavily involved in AIDS studies. After visiting many hospitals and her
research laboratory, I felt very glad that I had never had any desire to
visit Pattaya and Patpong bars, at least for the pleasures of the flesh.
My advice to those who frequent the bars is to stay sober, stay off
drugs, keep their wits about them and use a "full body condom". Oh, and
don't put a lot of faith in the little ladies "medical cards" either.
They're only there to lull the farangs into a false sense of security.

One of the posters here many years ago got it right. He said that you
don't pay these bar girls for the entertainment but instead to leave you
alone afterwards (or words to that effect). No commitment beyond the
agreed upon time span, wise advice indeed! I haven't seen his posts for
a long time. Maybe he failed to heed his own advice?

Should any of you care to marry a bargirl, be advised that they have a
tendency to "revert to type" after a period of time in a farang country.
My (former) department is frequently involved with the apprehension of
illegal immigrants working in brothels here. We always find a percentage
of illegals, as expected, but we also find a surprising number of Thai
wives working the day shift whilst their husbands are at work. One of
the motivators for this return is their propensity for gambling and the
need to repay debts so accrued. Many just simply like the "work".

My report is available for public perusal but I'll keep its location as
my little secret as it has my name attached, the "real one"!. It's not
on the WWW but may feasibly end up there in 20 years time.

What a load of waffle. Talk about BS stereotypes. Propensity for gambling
indeed... You really haven't a clue, if that nonsense is anything to go by.

Those of us who live in LOS see straight through this kind of rubbish.

Sounds like you may be right. I wonder why he couldn't provide the
details I asked him about. And a publicly available report in a secret
location that cannot be revealed? Hmmm.

Interesting. I didn't know that you Aussies were still oppressing the
Orientals, denying them the right to earn an honest living :)

I was in Perth a few years ago and had occasion to go down into the
center of town. Seemed like every other person was Oriental - looked
like Orchard Rd., in Singapore. Even met a Thai girl from Nong Kai.
Talked like a born Aussie, went to university in Oz and got married.
Now running a Thai restaurant in Albany.
Cheers,

Schweik

Some years ago I was invited to a supper party that was also attended
by some people who worked at the U.S. Embassy. One of them, a rather
ditsy woman, who was obviusly very impressed that SHE worked at the
EMBASSY, was expounding about a report that she had writen. It turned
out that she worked for the Narks and had assembled a report on herion
mules.

At the time you couldn't pick up a newspaper without reading an
account of another Nigerian arrested for muling dope. In fact there
was even an article suggesting that the reason for so many Nigerians
becoming mules was because if they were caught life was better in a
Thai jail then back home in Nigeria.

Anyway, after a lot of explaining about her research methods and the
other strife that she had to put up with she got to the conclusion of
her report -- that 95% of all heroin mules came from Nigeria. I damned
near choked on my drink and almost said "Oh! You must read the Bangkok
Post".... but her husband was a likable bloke so I didn't.

I suspect that my apathy for things associated with Governmental
studies and reports date from that party.

Then of course there was the famous Embassy Living Cost joke. Back
when Bulletin Boards were all we had someone posted a copy of the
latest "British Embassy Living Costs Report for Bangkok", in which it
stated that the average housing cost in Bangkok was $3,000 dollars a
month. This was years ago when the average computer nut was maybe
paying 1,000 a month for what he thought was a pretty posh place and
here is the Embassy is saying that 60 times that price is "average"?
Right, one of the lads, wears a flat cap just like any bloke....

It kind of wakes you up to which way the world turns when you discover
that the folks down tha Embassy get 60 times your rental as "cost of
housing allowance".

So yes, when someone tells me they composed a Government Report I
smile, hunch my shoulders and turn round and concentrate on my drink.

Cheers,

Schweik

British diplomats abroad don't rent their own houses.

The embassy has what are referred to as 'hirings'.

If you want to hire your own place you have to get it inspected, approved
and await permission from London to live 'out of hirings'.

In large legations the 'hirings' are actually an outright purchase.

Chances are all you saw was the figure for the loan payments for the block
of flats they'd bought divided by the number of flats...

Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
