Online SNCF Site for Buying Train Tickets
I just ordered train tickets online through the SNCF site and was
impressed with how efficient and easy it all was. I was able to search for bargain fares and, easiest of all, I was able to print the tickets myself. The only thing that could have been better was the seat reservation component - when your final tickets are proposed, you're told the seat numbers but there's no layout of where those seats are. I once had tickets for seats 25 and 26 and found that seat 26 was behind seat 25, so there's much room for surprises here. The site also has links to hotels and displays information about each, with the total cost calculated for the length of your stay. http://www.sncf.fr/ |

One of the great things about ordering online is that you can print out as many copies of your ticket as you like. Great for those with a tendency to misplace things! You can put one in your luggage, one in your pocket, one with your ID--you get the picture. And if you order enough time in advance you can get Prems. A typical fare is Paris to Nice for 25 EUR, however, these tickets are not refundable nor exchangeable. You may be asked for ID when you enter onto the platform, so the names must correspond exactly. Another possibility is internet last-minute fares where you can get first class seating for less than what you would ordinarily pay for second class, but the same rules apply as to non-refundability. Or maybe I was and didn't understand it. My foolish pride insisted on using the French language page, so maybe I missed something. Actually, it wasn't just pride; the Italian railway site doesn't mention some of its bargains on the foreign language pages. Maybe it was because two of the tickets I ordered were international, and maybe those can't be printed. I also found the site efficient and easy to use. They mailed the tickets to me. -- Barbara Vaughan My email address is my first initial followed by my surname at libero dot it I answer travel questions only in the newsgroup |
