There are 3 pieces to the price that a cruise line quotes on any given day
for a particular sailing (this of course has nothing to do with brochure
prices).

First part is airfare and associated taxes. Not much room for any reduction
there.

Second part is the Non-Commissionable portion of cruise fare. Sometimes
called port charges. No opportunity for reduction there.

Third is the Commissionable portion of cruise fare. That's the only place
there is really any room for any savings - by the TA splitting the
commission with you.

Since many commissions are in the 10-15% range of the commissionable
portion... that seems pretty good to me. 7-10% would be better if the
particular TA did a lot of volume with the cruise line and got a 15%
commission. If they only get 10% commission... the 5% is very good.

to clarify i didnt think anyone paid the brochure price. this was for
people who called cruise line and got price cruise only. price was
without taxes and port then 5% off that.

We need more of this kind of straightforward conversation on RTC. The
better we know how the TA operates, the better chance we can get at
appropriate pricing which is fair to all. Asking for unreasonable
pricings is a waste of everybody's time.

Cordelliism:

"...5% off brochure rate not good unless it's a specialty cruise..."

One of the inherent character traits of a know-it-all is their insatiable
craving to show every one how smart they are.

Here our resident know-it-all Goober Mike Cordelli, despite having been on
only a couple of mass market cruises and with virtual no personal knowledge
or experience with "specialty" cruises, attempts to enthrall us with his
expertise on cruise industry pricing.

As usual it's wrong!

In today's cruising environment where supply far exceeds demand, 5% off
brochure is NEVER good (specialty cruise or not).

the cruise line is offering as their price probably a much different

story.

I stand corrected, you are of course right in your vast attempts to
contradict others and pose no facts what so ever.

I could list cruises that do sell for list, as could most of the others here
in the newsgroup, but tonight I have better things to do.

Nice try, and glad you once again could add so much to the conversation.

8 hours and 6 minutes to contradict me today, did mom take your keyboard
away from you again? You're slipping, though still quite predictable.

Just got upgraded to cat.B , veranda mini suite on Volendam , 10 day
cruise 3/25/04 for $1299 pp inc. tax & port.
That's less then we paid years ago for a seven day out side with
no balcony!
Getting close!

It sounds like they are going to cut some of their commission and give it
back to you, or they do enough business to earn an override commission (or
larger commission) and give it back to you. You may be able to find a
better deal, but you would probably be OK with this.

It could be a good price, it could be a terrible price. Without
knowing more, the question is incapable of being answered, although I
would say in general that people pay less than 95% of brochure prices
(sometimes less than 25%).

My guesstimate is that most cruises can be gotten at about 50-60% of
brochure price.

Call the cruise line and get a bottom line price for the ship, sailing
date and cabin you are looking to purchase. Then shop with your local
travel agent, online agents and whomever else you can think of for
price quotes.

If you do not receive at least a 10% discount off the cruise only
price quoted by the cruise line then as they say you left money on the
table.
