Aruba
Just curious. One of the guys, Ray or John, mentioned in a news release
that Aruba was doing well with tourism being on the increase. I'm a little surprised because I was not impressed with the island. We spent a week at one of the high rises, Holiday Inn I think, and found very poor service almost everywhere we went. At the hotel, all meals were buffet but a large gratuity was added to the check. The wait service was as bad as I have ever had. It took 30 minutes to get a glass of water, which turned out to be a 5 ounce paper cup. The bellman took over an hour to come for our luggage and that standard of service was typical. We chartered a deep sea fishing day and found out immediately that the captain intended to get us seasick and asking to quit. He was disappointed that we kept eating the snacks we brought and enjoyed the roller coaster. After an hour or so he quit clowning around and we got some fishing in, caught a dolphin and some blues, I forget what else and he kept asking if we were ready to quit. By hour 4 in the 8 hour charter, he just cruised back and forth near the harbor asking if we were ready to go in. It was obvious the fishing was over. Service in most of the shops was of the same quality. We found that a week was much too long for us on Aruba. I have been told that Aruba has zero percent unemployment which might explain things. No competition for jobs reduces the incentive to improve. Have any of you had similar experiences on Aruba, or have things improved or changed in the several years since I was there? I talked with the CEO of a company that owns and operates five star resorts who considered and dropped a project in Aruba, largely due to the problems I encountered. I'll be interested in your thoughts. Harry Cooper |

Don't you love the criminal justice system there. An American schoolgirl
goes missing, and is seen with three men, and is never seen again, and one of the men confesses to the crime and is video-taped as to this fact and brags about it, and his father is a judge of some sort, and because there is no body, there is no crime! And this is the place you want to give money to! L0L! Fool's All! |
