Default Feedback on West coast trip route

Ok so from what most people here have to say I understand I should add
another stop between the drive from LA to SF (in addition to Carmel).
Where would you recommend that stop be?
Btw, I forgot to mention we'll be returning the car in SF, I understand
there's no need for it there...

Thanks,

Danny

Driving from Santa Barbara to Carmel
will take all day not including stops

Are you sure about that? According to Google Maps, the drive is 250
miles and they estimate 4-1/2 hours.

What route is that? Does it include time on the slower Coast Highway? One
really should drive at least part of the route along the coast, especially
around Big Sur. It's one of the most scenic highways in the country.

To the OP, I agree with the others. You will want to spend more time and
another night on the drive from LA to Carmel. Also there are several things
to do around Monterey/Carmel in addition to the 17-mile drive. Like visit
the Carmel Mission and go to the Monterey Acquarium. And do you like golf?
The 17-mile drive goes through/by Pebble Beach.

Can you reserve ahead of time for Hearst Castle?

Nature , Scenery ? Peace and quiet ? Race car driving ? Hiking ?
Shopping ? Being around people ? etc

I'm travelling with my gf and we are both 23. I'd say we'd want a taste
of almost everything you've mentioned, especially popular places
considered a "must visit" for tourists.
What we'd probably enjoy less would be hiking (we're lazy) and desert
scenery (we find that to be kind of boring).
I'd also add theme parks to the list, but we're visiting Orlando as
well so that should cover for it...

Try this site for a guide to the greater Big Sur area:

http://jrabold.net/bigsur/

You can get throught this area in about three hours (if there are no
road closures, and you don't get stuck behind too many slow RVs), but
that almost defeats the point of taking this route. Even if you don't
hike, you should stop at McWay Falls (short walk to a view of the
falls), Nepenthe or Cielo just for a drink at least--really for the
view. Stop at Cambria or San Simeon the night before so you have at
least a good part of a day for this part.

As you leave LA, I'd visit the Santa Monica Pier / Venice beach. I'd
enjoy Santa Barbara for a few hours: have a late breakfast/lunch at one
of the sidewalk cafes. ( I defer to the locals for specific help on that
as I haven't been there for a few years) For mileages :
http://www.usatourist.com/english/pl...ivingtour.html

Then leave there - head for San Simeone and stay at that Cavalier best
western that I mentioned a few days ago.( For a lot of the hotels along
the route I would make/confirm reservations as this is peak season ).
Next morning take the Hearst Castle tour ( across the street) for a few
hours. Then breakfast/lunch at the Cavalier hotel again. By now there
should be no caostal fog, so head north for the most beautiful ride of
your life along Big Sur. Stop often along the way to enjoy the vistas.
Also there are State beaches along the way if you do decide to take a
stroll thru nature. In a few hours, stop at Nepenthe for a
drink/lunch/snack. This was Orson Welles' old house and it's now a
lounge / bar with a glorious vew of the coast/ocean.
http://members.aol.com/jeff1070/wotw.html if you don't recognize the
name.
From there, head north to check into your hotel in the Carmel area ( you
DO have reservations ?). If nothing available in Carmel, I've often
stayed in Seaside, CA. Right off rt 1 at Del Monte Ave there is a
Holiday Inn, a Comfort Inn and ( if you want a living room and a
bedroom) a Doubletree Inn.

By then it's late afternoon. Drop off your bags and if still sunny and
not too late head to 17 mile drive.
I know it's late and you're maybe thinking that you'd like to do it in
the morning, but the reason to go now is to do the drive and THEN head
to Spanish Bay for cocktails ( a lot of drinking, huh? - you can have a
coke if you like) . It will cost you ~$15 to enter the 17 mile drive
area and you can redeem your receipt toward food/drink at Pebble Beach
resorts. The reason that you're going to Spanish Bay and not Pebble
Beach is to see / hear the bagpiper play at sundown. He will play at the
bar at Spanish Bay, while you sit next to fire-pits if it's cool. (ask
the guard when you pay the $15 to tell you what time to be there to hear
him) After he's done there, he will then walk in a loop around the
property to " put an end to the day". We always like it. So even if you
don't have time to do the 17 mile drive pay for it anyway to see him
play. Then come back in the morning and pay again if you have to to
really take the 17 mile drive: it's beautiful drive. The houses as well
as the wildlife and the views.

That filled up the extra day you had.

Next day return to Carmel to play tourist . Take that walking tour I
mentioned yesterday for an insider's view of the town. Then Pacific
Grove.

Nice trip.

If you're in 'Vegas on a Monday, I highly recommend going to the
Monday night Blues Jam in Images Lounge at the Stratosphere.

Here's "A bit of non-gambling Las Vegas" with about a dozen
useful links: http://geocities.com/iconoc/Articles/LasVegas.html

The "Don't-miss sights in San Francisco" page
http://geocities.com/iconoc/Articles/Sights.html has enough to
keep you busy for nine twelve-hour days. It includes links to
your best source of advice on where to eat here, the UseNet
Group ba.food, and the quite-good sfSurvey.

The best on-line map of San Francisco is an inter-active PDF:
http://geocities.com/iconoc/Grafix/MuniMap.gif. Click on it to
get the *.PDF. I recommend 150-300% magnification. A creation of
the San Francisco Municipal Railway, it includes all of its
routes.

The frequently-updated SPECIAL EVENTS page has
irregularly-scheduled music and dances as well as links to seven
calendars of regularly-scheduled dances, a composite of five of
them, and one of dance cruises and events around the world:

It seems to me I heard somewhere that Sapphyre wrote in article
.com:

Driving from Santa Barbara to Carmel will take all day not including
stops.

[. . .]

I'd advise you to ditch a day somewhere and plan one day for Santa
Barbara and Hearst Castle, and stay in San Simeon or Cambria, then
spend one day just driving to Monterey.

This caught my eye, perhaps because I'm not sure I understand the
intent. Santa Barbara and Hearst Castle are, I think, about 100 miles
apart, so it'll take two hours or more just to drive between them. The
Hearst Castle tours, as I recall, use up about half a day with the
connection to the bus, the entire tour, and the return to the parking
area--and they're on a schedule so you can't just pop in when you
arrive. This doesn't leave much time for exploration of Santa Barbara
things like the historic Stearns Wharf and the mission.
