I see where your trouble lies; you think that unless something is on the
front page of your newspaper or the lead item on your evening news or
yammered about continuously by the talking heads of your favorite cable
"news" channel, nobody is doing anything about it or even thinking about
it.

Not quite: I believe that if people are not informed of difficulties
around the world, they won't know about them. Additionally situations
that occur in the localities of the media empires of the US and Europe
are reported with endless microscopic detail, while the issues of the
rest of the world are sometimes briefly touched upon. Part of that has
to do with the expense of reporting in "far off" locales. Part of that
has to do with the general lack of interest of the viewer/readership.

That's not actually the case.

Really.

I see. Maybe "word of mouth" passes these stories, instead of papers/TV
whenever people aren't talking about sports or politics. The details
of these stories likely arrive in the guise of dreams and visions.

The people who actually read newspapers and news magazines, watch TV
news coverage or get their news from the many online sources have been
informed and know about them.

Again, you seem to think that unless the coverage is constant, people
won't know about these events.

I'd bet that very, very few people have the memory problems you seem to
have.

Yes. I wonder which turd started this thread by repeating news about a
bombing and serial killer as we do concentrate on travelling in Europe ;

I admit to being somewhat geographically challenged, but SFAIK, the
Scandinavian countries (including Norway) are generally included when
one speaks of "Europe"!

Well, last time I checked this place was still named rec.travel.europe:
recreation - travelling - europe. Where exactly does a mass murder fit
in this? "Have a bloody good stay - Norway"?

(OTOH you're probably right: Useless news about some murder in Norway
might not be on-topic, but at least more on-topic than the usual other
crap about the superiority of the Republicans.
I wonder why nobody has yet posted about the death of Amy Whinehouse.
Happened in Europe, too. And hell, she could sing.)

You just did, even if you can't spell her name. Personally, I found her
unoriginal and uninteresting, albeit with an OK voice.

Your opinion of the many people of the world and what they "seem to
think" is interesting conjecture. I'm talking about the content of the
media I encounter.

I don't know what TV you watch and what newspapers you read, but I have
to hunt hard to find out what is going on in Syria, and almost anywhere
in Africa or Southeast Asia. One or two short items about Syria in the
LA Times over many weeks, almost every day in the NY Times. Same with
Iran 2-3 months ago: Daily coverage in the NY Times, nothing in the LA
times, OC Register, and others. ABC Nightly news provided almost
nothing but a headline during the same periods of time.

So that's what I base my viewpoint on. I'm sure that will appear that
I "seem to think" something completely different to you.

Again, you seem to think that unless the coverage is constant, people
won't know about these events.

I'm not sure why; "constancy" was nowhere in my response.

I'd bet that very, very few people have the memory problems you seem to have.

You can see why I place little value on what you "bet" about vast
swaths of humanity and what they "seem to think".

Er, no. What you did just now was to post about it again, as a new topic
with a discrete header. HTH.
