Default driving across the USA - provisional itinerary

Is Austin or Houston best?

They're different. Houston is the country's 4th largest city; Austin is not
as big. Austin is a college town and the state capital. Houston has the big
city attractions (i.e. top-notch arts/culture, great restaurants and
museums, large downtown) while Austin is somewhat lacking with these. Austin
has a good downtown but it's more of a college/young scene. Austin has a
state history museum. Houston has some of the country's best art collections
in its many art museums. It also has some big attractions like NASA manned
space flight headquarters/mission control. Austin has prettier natural
scenery.

Also, Austin and San Antonio are relatively close to each other. I would
probably pick San Antonio over Austin for tourism.

I think I'd have to agree with others - too much road - not enough
stopping. We made a cross-country trip similar to yours and spent 6
weeks! There's lots to see in this great country. Highlights are
National Parks! Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Olympics, Niagra
Falls, Bad Lands, they're all great. You could almost route a trip
just going from national park to national park. Pretty much what we
did. My recommendation - forget the reservations - drive until you see
something you want - stop and take a look at it. If it's not great -
move on. The central states here are a whole lot of wide flat land -
wouldn't recommend too much time there. Smoky Mountains are wonderful
- as recommended - lots of beautiful country in the West - especially
Northwest. Oregon and Washington are absolutely beautiful. Most like
England - but much taller trees and mountains and much rougher ocean.
Enjoy your trip, let us know what you liked and didn't like when you
get back.
