A friend's daughter recently had trouble getting her initial US passport for
some reason--and the parents had to get their Congressman involved in
getting it processed--the daughter had applied for the passport in plenty of
time for her summer school trip to Ireland (where she is now)--but for some
reason her application was sent to another processing center, who lost track
of it. She was without a passport a week before her departure--and after
her parents attempted to track things down themselves without success, they
went arranged an appointment with their Congressman--and only after that
appointment in DC were they able to get the passport in time for their
daughter to leave for her summer school trip.

My US passport expires in 2007 and I'll be renewing it in early 2006, well
in advance of the *summer rush*--so I can renew for the normal *non-rush*
price and have less of a chance of my application getting misdirected or
lost--

Thanks for your reply and sharing your experience with the Passport folks.

I
will try to contact my Chicago office and go from there.

I am going to pay for the expedited service
($60.00 extra) which is supposed to hurry my passport back to me within

2
weeks. I am only 5.5 hours away from the Chicago office where I was

told
by the US Passport hotline my application would be going. Is it going

to
take the entire 2 weeks to get my passport back?

I have heard of no one in the last three years that has waited more than
10-11 days to receive their passport via normal channels.

You could call the Chicago office and try to wheedle an off-the-record
answer to your question.

Ours took 11 calendar days....Kentucky to the New Orleans PP office and
return.

I think there is even a place online, or a phone number that you can

call
to check the status once you have filed your application. I remember
doing that and being told that our applications were already processed

and
our PP's were in the mail.

BTW, many Post Offices now offer to take your photos. Ours gets $12.00,
which is 60% of what a local photograper gets.

I began the renewal process at my local post office on Saturday June 12. Today
is the 20th, 10 days. Too early to know if it comes today. It's promised
within 6 weeks (regular process).

I'll let you know when I get it.

My wife renewed her passport by mail just as the new $12
"security" fee went into effect. It was postmarked before
the effective date and apparently arrived after. No attempt
was made to collect the fee -- apparently they went by the
postmark.

Four weeks later, I called their automated voice-mail system
and was told that the renewal was in the mail. It arrived that
same afternoon. R

I applied for my passport at the local county courthouse on May 12, and
received it on June 10th...so it took just about 4 weeks. Not bad.

I would not renew that early. Your new passport will expire 10 years
after it is issued, and you will not get any credit for the overlapping
portion from your old passport.

The last time I renewed, it took about 5 or 6 weeks to receive my new
passport. Even though I live in California, it was processed at the
National Passport Center in Pennsylvania.
