Collision damage insurance with auto rental
"Jochen Kriegerowski" wrote in message ... "- Bobb -" schrieb I use ATT Gold Card which picks up $10,000 of damage after any coverage that I might have. My VISA Gold covers almost everything but damage to my (own or rental) car. Most of the time I opt for CDW when I rent. Makes me sleep better when I'm on holiday :-) "Sapphyre" wrote in message Most rental companies don't allow more than 28 day rentals anyways Of course they do. Check for 'long term rental' on their websites. You can't book that on the 'normal' reservations pages because special rates apply. Jochen Most US credit cards cover the CDW. Foreign cards rarely do. As to showing insurance coverage, has been a requirement for years in California. If stopped for traffic infraction, thay can ask for the insurances card. But all rentals carry insurance. The required coverage is for liability insurance and not for your own vehicle. |

I am making a conscious decision each time that if more than $10,000 of damage to rental vehicle I'm on the hook for the balance, but ( luckily) never had any incidents so saved quite a bit. Of course if I total a 18,000 car then I'm out $8,000 after AT&T's 10,000 payout. Someone earlier mentioned California proof of insurance. I have rented in CA every previous year (but not this year), done as above, and never had to show anything ... is that something new this year ?? Bobb You might want to check the provisions carefully. At least some cards only cover you if you have collision/comprehensive. |

almost every state in the US requires insurance, next foolish assumption Why did someone explicitly point out that is was required in California, then? "Almost every state" implies that there are some which don't? Jochen |

Jochen We were talking about the requirement to show liability insurance coverage to either an officer of the law or the other driver in an accident. I bet in Europe there are people driving on the roads without insurance. If you have no assets you really do not need insurance. If in an accident and no insurance, and no assets, what are they going to do to you? Nothing to sue for, and we rarely put debtors in prison these days. Read for content next time. |

If insurance is compulsory, that's the easiest way to check it. Anything else would require at least a phone call. I bet in Europe there are people driving on the roads without insurance. Yes. Not legally of course, but they pay a hefty fine if they are caught. Depending on the country the way of proving coverage is different (sticker on the license plate, on the windshield, or whatever) And believe me: They check that not only in case of an accident. If in an accident and no insurance, and no assets, what are they going to do to you? If you get caught more than once they can do a lot, from seizing the car to revoking your driver's license, to put you in jail (not because of the debt, but because you broke the law)... lots of methods. The other party is being paid by some insurance's fund, who have then 35 years to claim their money back: They may ring at your door after you've long time forgotten that you had an accident in the 1970s Read for content next time. Ok - you have to be insured in every state, but have to prove it only in California? ;-) Jochen |

ATT's wording was that they provided the coverage after primary collision coverage IF driver has coverage - otherwise they are first in line. At least that's how it USED to be - I will recheck online before next time I need a rental. |
