Florida, tax and tourists

Hi,

Still preparing for my trip to Florida. Are tourists liable to taxes in the
same way as residents? Over here, tourists don't have to pay VAT sales tax.

Florida has a sales tax of 6-8% (depends on the locality that
you're in). There are no exceptions as who pays, but certain
items like packaged-food and medicine are exempt. Also,
there may be a local bed-tax on hotel occupancy. [Rog']

If you are renting a car, be prepared for a barrage of fees and taxes
that will increase the total cost by 30% or more over the quoted rate.

Yep. You can argue even more so. Becasue tourists use facilities like
hotels or car rentals are loaded with extra fees and taxes. These kinds of
charges hit travelers much more so than local residents.

Don't know where you are at, but, here in FL we have sales tax
automatically added to almost everything you buy. Tourists are a great
boost to the economy that way which keeps us from having a state income
tax

I assume you're from the UK. Not all VAT is refundable in the UK, just the
ones for purchases you plan on taking out of the country, and is only worth
it if you're spending above a certain amount. VAT on lodging and food is
not refundable.

Canada has a similar scheme for GST. The US has no such system because all
sales taxes are state or locally mandated, not a national sales tax.

If you spend large amounts on goods that you take abroad most states
have tax rebate processes. They are clumsy and require large purchases.
For anything you consume you pay the tax like locals.

pay duty on it again when I land in Britain?
