Need help for my trip
JP Peiren wrote:
Hi, I'm planning a trip in May next year. We are two couples (2 drivers) This is our schedule: Day 01 Brussels - Tucson Day 02 Visit Saguaro NP + Organ Pipe Cactus NM + stay in Scottsdale Day 03 Scottsdale - Flagstaff - Wallnut Canyon + stay near Petrified Forrest Day 04 Visit Petrified Forrest + Canyon De Chelley (worth visiting ?) + stay near Mexican Water Day 05 Visit Mesa Verde + Goosenecks State Park Goosenecks: worth 5 minutes + stay in Moab Is Antelope Canyon worth visiting ? yes .... at all costs Note: they say "visit at middle of day" ... this only matters if you want a photo, made with a simple camera, of your kids in sunlight. Otherwise, any time is fine, though you need a tripod for photos (1 second or longer exposures.) Both lower and upper are beautiful, and lower opens earlier. You need not see both unless you are a photo freak. The lower one has ladders and some tight spots. Just show up at the gates ... don't get a tour from Page. You are missing Natural Bridges. It is a bit out of the way, and similar to the larger arches in Arches, but very nice. Day 06 - 07 Visit Arches, stay in Moab Day 08 - 09 - 10 Visit Canyonlands + stay in Moab You don't need this much time unles you do LOTS of hiking. Day 11 Moab via Capitol Reef + stay near Bryce Canyon (Rubys Inn ?) Capitol Reef can be slighted. Day 12 - 13 Visit Bryce Canyon Day 14 Bryce - Cedar Breaks - stay in Layton or Ogden This is too much for Bryce. Take the (expensive!) 70 minute helicopter tour of Escalante-Grand Staircase Day 15 Layton - Yellowstone NP (is the Old Faithfull a good place to stay ?) Day 16 - 20 Visit Yellowstone NP Day 21 Yellowstone - Salt Lake City Day 22 Salt Lake City You are missing Zion. You must see Zion. If you must ... drive from Moab through Grand Reef, stopping only to see the prtroglyphs and making a quick tour down the road, and head off all in one day to Bryce, doing a quick drive through. Then the next day do a helicopter trip if you can afford it, do some hikes, and head off to Zion. You need at least one and a half and preferably two days in Zion. You could also try cutting a bit from Canyonlands. The north part of Canlonlands in not needed. You might also want to spend more time in Yellowstone. Two days with parts of the travel days is enough only for a quick look. Doug McDonald |

Canyon de Chelly is, in my opinion, a better choice than Petrified Forest.
Having said that, the way you are heading east, towards Moab, has you going a long way out of the way to reach PF and Canyon de Chelly. I would suggest you would be better off heading straight to Moab, via Page, and try and use any time saved to see Zion Canyon. Although Moab is a great base, you could drop a day there, plus the one saved not going to PF and CDC and stay a couple of days at Zion, only 2.5 hours from Bryce. We would like to take pics of cacti + blooms. Anyone who knows good places in Arizona ? I saw a lot of blooming cacti between Phoenix and Page some years ago. Any help would be appreciated. Thankx. Jean Paul Yellowstone and Jackson Hole Wyoming are an entirely different part of the west and hugely differenct climatically. I would add at least one day to the Yellowstone and see some of the Jackson Hole Teton National Park area. Actually I could honestly reccomend longer, but then you would be lsighting the southwest. As to weather you can get freezing temperatures at night in the Yellowstone area in May (darn near it in early June) day times will be cooler as well, Arizona and southern Utah are already heating up by then so pack for two different climate zones. Old Faithful ldoge I haven't stayed there in 30 years it is quaint has the advantage of being in the park, but a lot of people stay at W Yellowstone Montana or Gardiner on the North. When driving to Yellowstone from SLC you may want to go by way of Idaho Falls Idaho, Rexburg, St Anthony through Island Park and into W yellowstone then return via Jackson Hole thus seeing a different route each way. (An alternative is to take the teon Pass to Jackson from Idaho Falls it is a very nice drive over a well build mountain road.) If you hadn't guessed I used to live in Idaho Falls, Idaho ;-) and yes I am a bit prejudiced but I think honest about it. |

Sounds like a great trip, but have you considered visiting the Grand Canyon? Personally I'd rank it higher than several of the places on your list.
