In fact, they never were new." yep, I agree you they were never "new" but also to say they stopped being new long ago, by the same reasoning, wouldnt san fran n longer be considered northern cali? apples and oranges. "They" who stopped calling it the new world are not the "they" which still call it northern Cal. The former no longer found it useful. The latter still find it a useful distinction, even if it is inaccurate. I suspect if there ever comes a need to differentiate between southern, middle, and northern, adjustments will be made as such. For instance, if the semi-serious, semi-jocular movement to break the state into three parts ever succeeds. To date, there is little need. (Although I'd bet you in some deep dark recess of DOT or some other state function, the names are different). You'd be surprised what folks "out west" consider to be "New England". You'd be surprised what folks in New England consider to be "out west". Folks from NYC get occasionally frustrated when people say "downtown" for "in town" because they actually come from somplace that has a down, middle and up. (A distinction in some places between up-west and up east as well). They are titles, not physical descriptions. After living in Arizona and Washinton (state) for some years, I got a job in eastern Kansas. Folks in Kansas always bristled when I refered to it as "here in the East". ************* DAVE HATUNEN ) ************* * Tucson Arizona, out where the cacti grow * * My typos & mispellings are intentional copyright traps * |

Do you think it could be as simple as the fact that it is about 280 miles due north to Oregon and 480 miles due southeast to Mexico? That would...um.....yup, put in well into the top half of the state. If that isn't to your liking, I would vote for "Mid-north Central Coastal California". That description is getting us where we need to be on this topic. San Luis Obispo is Central California, kind of the boundary between northern and southern California. Someone once said the boundary is where the newspaper delivered to homes changes from the San Francisco Chronicle to the Los Angeles Times. ************* DAVE HATUNEN ) ************* * Tucson Arizona, out where the cacti grow * * My typos & mispellings are intentional copyright traps * |

I didnt want to start a whole big thing, I was just curious if it was people who didnt know how far north cali actualy went after san fran.... If you've ever driven it you'd know why we ignore it. It's nothing but scenery. it has always bugged me that people call it northern, thats all.... People who complain about it being Northern California bug me. ************* DAVE HATUNEN ) ************* * Tucson Arizona, out where the cacti grow * * My typos & mispellings are intentional copyright traps * |

wrote in message ups.com... I dont think anyone with a sense of geography refers to either maryland or virginia as being southern states........they are clearly Mid-atlantic..... It's not geography but history and political science. Check out the Mason Dixon line. but then again, brains are not something floridians are known for.....a state that cant figure out how to use a punch ballot can hardly be counted on to provide geographical descriptors..... in any news story on a national program, they wont say storms battered
the south if maryland or va is involved, they will say, the mid atlantic is at risk for high winds, etc...... I dont think you could find more than 2 or 3 people in ten who would refer to maryland as being a southern state, regardless of where the mason dixon was drawn...... |

I dont think anyone with a sense of geography refers to either maryland
or virginia as being southern states........they are clearly Mid-atlantic..... I grew up in New York State sort of near Syracuse. We always called Maryland and Virginia southern states because they were south of the Mason-Dixon Line in the Civil War. When we drove to Ocean City, Maryland, we were in the South for sure, no doubt about it. |
