maybe it is cheaper to rent as there are no students and no exhibitions

Have you been there? There are many city parks
and hills just ouside to refresh. Mosquitos? Not in centre town.
Anyway, it's a different choice than going to the beaches or to the
mountains,
you can stay inside a city that is not packed with tourists
and use intensively the train - Bologna is the major hub in Northern
Italy -
to travel all around and see other cities of arts.

There are good reasons why everyone heads for the coast in these
months.

Bologna is cool for sure, but in July, August, it's completely horrid.
That's why there are no tourists (or locals) there then.
