Hi,
Does anyone has experience in traveling to Ethiopia? I'm planning a trip to Ethiopia, probably northern highlands and the historical circuit. I have a question concerning the road condititions: Is it true that in northern Ethiopia only the road between Addis abbaba and Korem is paved? Secondly I heart something about a huge national "road program" (for pavement of the main roads): true? Anybody any ideas? Greetings, f |

Greetings, f Hi, Parts of the mainroads are paved (not possible to say where). Chinese contractors are doing this job but they are being paid by government per km asphalt but they are just doing the easy parts. For instance a must is at least visiting Lalibela but going to there you need a 4x4 or travel by air from Addis You don't mention how you like to travel. - By own means i.e. hired car without driver, or driver included or as backpacking?. Let me know. At least I can give you some advice as we lived three years in Eth. and made 1 year ago a trip to the North and South (see website below) ================================== Lou Andreoli Human, wildlife & nature photographer http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~louine ================================== |

Travelled around the Historical route, Addis, Axum, Gondar, Bahar Dar, Lalibela, Addis. I used Ethiopian Airlines, had no time to spend on the roads, BUT, many roads are dirt roads, I guess you can imagine a very dry dirt road? Then there are lots of loose stones the size of a fist so you can not speed to fast. Then the dust................ Get a Toyota Landcruiser with air filter! Any other questions? /Nisse -- Remove the obvious part before replying by mail please! |
