Relocation to Atlanta, Chicago or Miami
I have lived most of life in Dallas, Texas. Dallas is a nice clean
city and perfect place to raise a family. But it is not a vibrant charming city. It is pretty much flat and far away from ocean, mountains or natural scenic places. There are very few things you can do in weekends or and holidays. Now I have an opportunity to move to Atlanta, Chicago or Miami. I have visited all these cities but not long enough to know the cities and their surroundings very well. I want to live in a vibrant city with full of life and close to ocean, mountain or beautiful scenic area . The weather and cost of living are also factors that need to be considered. I have Asian Indian background and want to blend in the mainstream of American lifestyles. I wonder how it is to live in Atlanta, Chicago or Miami as compared to Dallas Texas. Your comments will be highly appreciated. |

(the mountains near Atlanta may not be mountains if you have experience with anything taller than about 1500m) Chicago is considerably colder than Dallas. On the other hand I think it's probably the most diverse of the four cities you mention. -- Doug Smith W9WI Pleasant View (Nashville), TN EM66 http://www.w9wi.com |

Your comments will be highly appreciated. Well, I've never lived in Dallas, so I can't make a comparison. I live in Atlanta. There is certainly a lot happening here now, culturally and economically, but I guess it really depends on what you're looking for. We have a large and growing Indian community and plenty of diversity -- so you'll blend in as much as you want. Weather won't be too different from Dallas. And the city is still affordable, compared to places like New York, Boston, San Fran, etc. You'd have to decide whether you want a house in the suburbs, where you can get a lot for less money, or a more expensive life intown. It's less than two hours to the mountains, and you're roughly 4-5 hours to the coast on two sides (Atlantic and Gulf). A lot of folks are critical of Atlanta and imply that it is soulless. As a vacation center, there is a limited amount to do. But living here is much nicer than visiting here. It's a very pleasant place to live, relatively easy to get around, inexpensive, and friendly. Of course, the more people move here, the bigger it gets. So, that's my two cents. I think Chicago would be a lot of fun to live in, but I've never lived there. And I don't like the idea of its winters! Sarah |

Be perpared for *major* sticker shock when it comes to housing prices in all three. Dallas is an extremely affordable metro area. Well, I've never lived in Dallas, so I can't make a comparison. I live in Atlanta. .... We have a large and growing Indian community and plenty of diversity -- so you'll blend in as much as you want. Weather won't be too different from Dallas. What? Are you impervious to humidity? My family moved from Atlanta (Alpharetta) to Dallas (Plano) three years ago, and the difference in humidity is *huge*, as is the effect on comfort. And Dallas has a lot more sun. A lot of folks are critical of Atlanta and imply that it is soulless. Me for one. 8 So, that's my two cents. I think Chicago would be a lot of fun to live in, but I've never lived there. And I don't like the idea of its winters! The winters there are definitely tough. Miami has the heat *and* humidity, plus the complication of hurricanes. In the end, you've got to go with the combination that suits your desired lifestyle best. IMO, Fort Worth has certain charms. Have you ever lived there? -- Larry |

Your comments will be highly appreciated. I'm from Ft. Worth and from the cities that you have mentioned, I have only been to Atlanta. I will say that if I could find a job that paid just a little more than I make now, mostly because of state income taxes, I would move to Atlanta in a heartbeat. When I was there last August, it was over 100 degree's in DFW and was in the mid 80's in Atlanta. The people there were dying from the heat. I laughed the whole time that I was there telling people to get on the plane and come back to DFW with me so they could see some real heat. Keeping an eye of the temperature in Atlanta and DFW, Atlanta always seems to be about 10 degrees cooler in the summer and about 10 degrees warmer in the winter. The landscape was beautiful lush green grass and millions of trees everywhere, unlike DFW where there aren't near as many trees and the grass is dead. I was looking around the south side of Atlanta around Fayette and Henry Counties and it is just beautiful there. It looks as though home prices are quite a bit more there than in DFW, but rentals seem to be comparable. From what I can tell, you are within 4 hours from the coast at Savannah and within 2 hours from the Smokies. Everyone that I encountered in Atlanta was so friendly. DFW is a pretty friendly place, but Atlanta has DFW beat there too. Check out http://www.rentlist.net for an idea of home prices in the Atlanta area and do a search on cost of living. Again, I have never been to Chicago or Miami, but my cousin used to live close to Miami and said that it was the "armpit of the nation", for what that's worth. Good luck! --- avast! in Dallas, Texas...There are very few things you can do in weekends or and holidays. In a metropolitan area of 4 million people? Now I have an opportunity to move to Atlanta, Chicago or Miami. Miami. It's always warm and you're on the ocean. Actually, my Asian Indian friend and his whole family are thinking of moving to Dallas. |

Relocation to Atlanta, Chicago or Miami
Unless you are fluent in Spanish, and enjoy bars on your doors and windows, I wouldn't move to Miami. Even without that, I wouldn't move to Miami if it was the last place on earth. I lived there for five years when I was growing up...and that was a long time ago (I've lived in Central Florida for the past 33 years)...it sucked then. It sucks worse now. English is optional, and most choose not to take that option. Road signs, store signs, labels on products...all in spanish. The crime is high, and so are the prices. Yeah, there's the beach....but you'll be "enjoying" that with about 15 million other people. There are plenty of beaches elsewhere. My husband lived just north of Atlanta for 3 years before moving back here (this was before we got married). I visited him up there many times and, while the area is GORGEOUS and the people are really nice, the traffic is a nightmare. It lost its charm for me after the third or fourth visit....but it's MUCH better than Miami. I've never been to Chicago, so I can't say anything about that area. Of course, these are just MHOs. ) |

Your comments will be highly appreciated. Miami you'll either love or hate and most folks wouldn't describe it as a "great place to raise a family". Atlanta is Dallas in Georgia, possibly with worse traffic. Chicago is on Lake Michigan and is quite diverse with a huge cultural history. But if you can't handle the cold, you're gonna hate it. Personally, I'd go to Chicago, but if you can't afford it, or can't handle the cold, then I guess you're headed to Atlanta. If you like the ocean, and can handle the fairly dynamic and to some extent, "mature" culture of Miami, that might be more your speed. |
