What was your assignment there?

Almost certainly National Service.

Nope, short service commission.

I had a friend who did his NS in Aden.

Under Mad Mike Mitchell?

The big troubles in Aden/Crater Towns, with Mad Mitch etc. were some
years later - mid-60s.
The late 50s. probs were more involved with Yemen/Oman/Saudi border &
infiltration problems in the desert Sultanates areas, east of Aden
Town to the Oman border.

Colin Mitchell compared shooting Arabs as "like shooting grouse, a brace
here and a brace there".

He was a pretty unbalanced individual.
Aden finished his army career.

It still is, pretty much.

The armed forces are still half officered by British officers on
secondment.

We didn't 'pull out' of Oman. We successfully put down Saudi-inspired
infiltrations and remained, consolidating the nation's security.

Keep telling yourself that.

When the British troops pulled out the shooting stopped.

Not before.

And a raggedy arsed gang of Arabs kicked his backside out of town, which
he didn't like one bit.

How a bunch of irregular Arabs street fighters managed to defeat a full
battalion of veteran Scots infantry, plus specialists, is something of a
mystery to this day, but it had to be a leadership problem.

Your lack of knowledge of Aden is hopeless.
The Northumberlands 'lost' Crater Town.
Mitchell re-took & held, albeit very viciously.
