PANAM in the sixties was VERY good.

And expensive (for the 60's)

Maybe that's why it was expensive.

A lot of the cost had to do with goverment regulation.
Service was how you chose among carriers that cost the same equally high
price.

Must be BA, no doubt.

My friend went BA on a 2 week holiday to Belize. BA lost all luggage. It
was returned only AFTER he arrived back home 2 weeks later.

Many years ago, I flew American Airlines 747s from LAX to BOS on a fairly
regular basis. They served meals as good as that, and you could call the
night before and order a "special meal" which could be one of several
choices, if you didn't want whatever the two meal choices were. We also
enjoyed the upper lounge, where they had a bar/lounge setup with FAs
serving
drinks.

Oh... did I mention that this was in COACH..?

Things have changed. You now have to pay $3,000 for what I got in the
70's
for $100.

A. You're mistaken as to the price. It was more than $100. A good bit
more. As for the meal, the last time I looked, AA does give me a nibble
between LAX and BOS, admittedly not as "good" as the coach meal of the
70s.

Not sure about BOS-LAX, but HNL-SFO/LAX was $110 in Coach and $144 in First
Class as recently as 1969.

B. You do recall that dirty little word "inflation". .....And I can buy
coach and first class RTs between LAX and BOS for a good bit less than
$3,000. In fact the non-refundable economy ticket is, adjusted for
inflation, less today than in the 70s, actually a good bit less than the
"standby half price ticket" from SFO to DFW in my drawer. Of course,
being in dress blues, that trip was upgraded to First, with champagne &
prime rib carved in the aisle on DL.

That's why flying is so much less pleasant. Folks will select "cheap, but
Greyhoundish" instead of "costly luxury" nearly every time.

Was that eash way or roundtrip?

What cost $110 in 1969 would cost $648.90 in 2007.

I found a roundtrip for next month (kayak search) on NW for $373
roundtrip SFO-HNL. UA and AA are $380.

And that's the point. It cost me $750 to fly to Europe in 1970. That
would be something like $3000 today in economy. The good old days of
the CAB.

One way fares - walk-up, refundable. With meals, etc. And when Continental
started service, "K" class (no meals) was $85.00

What cost $110 in 1969 would cost $648.90 in 2007.

Compare that with unrestricted "Y" today and you'll see the fares are quite
comparable.

Hi!- That would be Pan Am 747's in the 1970's. They were 'the world's
most experienced airline'. How about breakfast between SFO and LAX in
First Class? And real food & tableware in coach. Also TWA's L-1011's
were great before the Icahn era.

I can remember eating my way SFO-HNL on a Pan Am 707 in economy class in the
late '60's. and a 3 hour meal service Dallas-Honolulu on "747 Braniff
Place." I guess it really was a golden age. Flying was fun.
