It wouldn't be that difficult to set a maximum time per call.
However, if the airlines are trying to maximize revenue, then they
aren't going to rush to kill a potential cash cow.

Starting with their business class passengers who wil talk just as
much as they want if this Pandora's Box is opened up. Then the crew
will be armed in order to stop all the fights that will break out
between those trying to sleep and those yapping. Etc. etc.

picocell on the aircraft. Its presence allows GSM phones to go into low
power mode since the antenna is really near. So their emissions are much
lower.

The aircraft is equipped with satellite link which then bounces the
signals back to an earth station that connects to the telephone system.
It is not known how much they will charge per minute.

I think they should allow inbound SMS, but not allow inbound phone calls
(aka: no phone ringing all the time). Having ability to make outbound
calls can be very useful, but perhaps calls should be limited to say 5
minutes.

"I made the flight, we're 45 minutes late, meet me at arrivals in
airport at 16:30"

I would be in favor of 1 call per pax for a max of 30 seconds.

And you would control that how?

By having a device that disconnects calls after 30 seconds and doesn't
permit another one from the same phone. So, yeah, one per phone, not one
per pax.

I would like to know who's going to pay for a system like that. No US
carrier has yet put in an internet system yet because of the cost.

Now there's a thought. Wire each set and let 'em have it. Works with
tazers.

I didn't say they would, just that it is possible to limit the number of
calls and the duration of the call. Of course, this has nothing to do
with internet access. US carriers are going to have internet access, and
passengers will pay fo it.

Yes, but with a totally different system than the original Boeing one.
Which enough passengers, in fact, were not willing to pay for.

The EU has apparently approved cell phone use in Europe, but I don't have the
details. I don't know if they use microcells aboard the aircraft or simply
rely on ground stations.

It's a bit of a negative development, because many business customers cherish
having a few hours without the interruptions from a cell phone.

Thanks 4 the help guys. But I am more interested in the sending email
thingy than just the phone calls. it's quieter and more respecting of
others :-D

I hope I dint ruffle too many feathers here.
