Northern Sweden with kids desperate to see northern lights

I am planning a trip to Hemavan, Sweden next Feb to see northern
lights and enjoy some snow play with my 3 sons aged 6, 8, 11. My
eldest is keen to try skiing. Does anyone know if it is possible to
arrange a taster one day ski experience with hire/lift pass/tuition in
this area ? I am also looking for advice on booking a train trip to
cross into arctic circle from here. Finally I am looking for top tips
to get a sensational northern lights experience

Don't know about skiing, but as far as I remember there is no train in
Hemavan (?). There is www.inlandsbanan.se passing through Storuman, not sure
if they operate in winter though. For bus timetables: www.resplus.se.

What do you expect from crossing the arctic circle anyway? After all
it's just a sign saying "arctic circle". Don't miss the Sami market (3-6
feb) in Jokkmokk!

For the northern lights, take a tripod if you intend taking pictures. In
Umea I saw them mostly around midnight or a bit later. It was always
fantastic!

No, they don't.

For overland travel, you'd go by train to Umea (try
http://www.connex.se for that) and by bus Umea-Hemavan (it's a 6-hour
ride). Hemavan also has a little airport, if you're in a hurry and/or
don't care for scenery.
