Croatia to Venice.
For anyone who might care, we loved Split Croatia, stayed 6 days in a
small hotel in the Palace of Diocletian. We wanted to go to Venice before leavcing for the USA and we felt our best alternative was aboard an overnight boat to Anacona Italy then train to Venice..The bus ride was a possible and maybe it would have been better...the boat ride and train was a bit of a problem. Venice was great, stayed in a hotel close to the Train station for convenience with luggage and took the boats to San Marco...etc. By the way it seems short change policy is alive and well in Venice...and europe in general..maybe only because we were obvious as Ameican travelers... The euroexchange was around 1.29 to 1.30 used Citibank debit cards at ATMs seem to give me the best exchange rate..but I didnt try them all...the cash exchange was higher. |

The bus, like any bus, is pretty painful. I only went as far as Rijeka, so I imagine a longer trip would be worse :P I found the Split-Rijeka bus trip okay, and it's much more scenic than any boat trip could be. From Rijeka to Venice is only about three hours. ============== j-c ====== @ ====== purr . demon . co . uk ============== Jack Campin: 11 Third St, Newtongrange EH22 4PU, Scotland | tel 0131 660 4760 http://www.purr.demon.co.uk/jack/ for CD-ROMs and free | fax 0870 0554 975 stuff: Scottish music, food intolerance, & Mac logic fonts | mob 07800 739 557 |

But so many people are easy pickings -- I am always amazed at the people who hold out a handful of change and ask the vendor to pick out what he wants. SO much trouble to figure out that silly money! rjf |

I've done it- especially when language has been a problem. I did it a few times at the big market in Riga, Latvia. I doubt I was ripped off, and if I was I would consider it a trivial amount. -- David Horne- http://www.davidhorne.net usenet (at) davidhorne (dot) co (dot) uk http://www.davidhorne.net/pictures.html http://soundjunction.org |

my experience isnt handing out a handful of money, its the way the
person nods and looks to the next cuistomer as though no change is coming. I encountered this problem quite often in eastern europe. Sure I catch then they give me the correct change but many do not. |
