Understood -- But in the general case, asking on usenet can often be far
more productive then phoning the company.

They're both crapshoots.

Why would anyone do that when they can waste two days looking for an
answer on Usenet..?

Calling an airline can easily take 30-45 minutes (or at least that has
been the case the only times I've ever tried to contact American)

Asking on usenet takes 2-3 minutes to post, then another few minutes to
read up later on -- You don't "waste two days", since you can continue
your life during that "wasted" period.

Assuming that someone replies with an informative answer within "a few
minutes". In this case, everyone told him the same thing - "Call the
airline."

but he didn't know that was going to happen, when he posted.

Yes but getting the most information can be helpful and can help lead
into different solutions.

In this case, I'd change "often" to "rarely"...

That all depends on what and where you ask. I can't remember the last
time I posted something that didn't at least result in an answer
pointing me in the right direction, if not actually answering my
question(s)

If you don't understand the airline industry, ticket classes, etc, then
it's a perfectly reasonable question.

If you do understand such things, you wouldn't be calling.
