We are thinking of a trip to DC in 2012 - July time frame.
Found the DC trolley thing that we will probably use to get around.
What is a moderate priced area to stay in near D.C. that will have
decent food nearby? The Trolley has shuttle tour from some hotels, is
it worth the shuttle it to not have to drive and park in D.C to get
on the tolley? ?

I can't advise on hotels but the DC Metro system is usually quick, clean
and convenient even if they have been having some trouble with their
escalators lately. You might acquire the Zagat restaurant guide.

Try Alexandria, Virginia
"Located in the heart of the greater Washington area, across the river from
National Harbor "
We found a Motel close to the Subway and it was a very short, quick ride
over to Washington.

Annapolis if it's not too far away for you.

With traffic, that would be a huge waste of time.

You might want also to consider staying out of DC near a Metro station.
Try a Google search on
hotel near Metro Bethesda (or Rockville)

Last time we stayed in Georgetown at http://www.savoysuites.com/ and we
got it for $99/night through venere.com, though I don't see it there
anymore. Breakfast not included, but underground parking was, and since
we had driven from NYC, that was a big savings versus many hotels that
charge for parking. Try Venere.com. It was very convenient in terms of
restaurants. No metro, but a bus runs straight to the tourist areas.

Staying near a metro station sounds good in theory, but of course so
many people want to do that that the hotels near metro stations are
either not-cheap, or really run down (like in College Park, where we
stayed at a run down Quality Inn & Suites) but it was walking distance
to the metro.
