Nothing wrong with Sydney at night - provided you keep your wits
aboutyou and remain alert. I ave neve had any problems in New York
after dark either, for the same reason.

Trouble is if you have to keep alert etc then there is something wrong
really

They are both big cities. Melbourne isn't as big as London - population
is just under 4 million - but it's no village.

In any big city the traveler should take some reasonable precautions

for
safety. However, I drove cabs in Melbourne on the night shift for 17
years; I was never physically assaulted although I did have

half-a-dozen
fairly scary moments. Not bad when you consider that I carried well

over
50,000 passengers in that time.

If security is a major worry for you, then stay near the bright lights
and avoid the back streets of some suburbs after midnight (St Kilda,
Footscray, Springvale). There are no aggressive street beggars like
Madrid or Rome, but you may have problems with the occasional drunk if
you are near some discos or pubs after 10 pm.

But, bearing in mind that last year I was able to compare with many
other cities, including London, I would rate Melbourne and Sydney as

two
of the safest major cities after dark in the world.

If you think about that sort of thing you'd never leave your front door.
For example, I went to NYC last year - based on your logic no-one should
ever go there.

Don't be so insulting. This is a violent world now, don't you read the
papers ?

Watch out for trams running up and down Flinders Lane. If you don't know
they are there, they can take you by surprise. Even the locals forget
about them sometimes.

Hi All

A troll.

I'm a bit slow on the up-take sometimes. In the medical groups (as some
here know) I can usually sniff out a troll fairly quickly.

Look back through this thread at the postings by "_" ).
Are we having fun yet?

Just for the record, below are the total postings by this author since
arrival here. Always seemingly innocuous, but just provocative enough or
silly enough to provoke a well-meant response:

It started with this on 30th Oct (when do School Holidays start in the
UK?):

Is using a simple AM/AFM radio and a laptop allowed on a UK to Australia
quantas flight ? Do they scan and or inspect itmes like these for
security reasons ? It is ok to carry and use these ?
If a laptop is ok is there any internet access available, if so how does
this work ?
...................
Should the first timer on a UK to Oz fliught be concerned about things
still since 9/11. Is the security about as good as it can get or are
their roon for improvments / more consistancy perhaps ?
....................
Is it a feasable idea while I stay in a suburb of Melbourne to vist
Minyip around the middle of December and perhaps stay there for a week
or so ? Is there much to see, cheap to eat etc ?
Wonder if you know what the hotel is like assuming there is only one ?
Can I book a room wirthout notice I wonder ?

(Minyip is a tiny village halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide)
...................
Hi,
does anyone have any experience with copying photos from digital camera
(CF memory card) to CD while traveling across Australia? I just want to
be safe in case I run out of memory on card

JUst by a few 512MB or 1GB SD cards if you camera can support this size.
YOu'll get a few 1000 shots worth should be enough I would have thought
...................

(followed by the one-liners in this thread).

Trams actually do run in Flinders Lane - between Market & King Streets.
