Can somebody please tell me where I can find a good deal on car rental
in the UK?

Try www.autoeurope.com
Also the websites of the companies themselves
www.nationalcar.co.uk (cheaper than www.nationalcar.com)
www.europcar.co.uk etc

There are also many local agencies which may hire older cars for a lower
cost.

same pricing structure i.e. cheap if booked way ahead.

Before you do that I would do a search on what people have said about them
in the past. Too many horror stories. Personally I wouldn't touch them with
a 10 foot pole!

Assuming you're coming from the US (although I suppose it holds true for other countries
as well), check with the "holidays" division of the airline you are using. We generally
fly and rent a car through British Air. Two weeks ago we rented a Hertz car through BA
for the princely sum of $23 for a day, plus, if in Central London, Ken's congestion
charge of GBP5.
That was it (well, except for the 81p per litre petrol.)
In recent years it has been as low as $16 per day.

You should try a Car rental wholesaler like Europe By Car (or one of
our competitors). Companies like Europe By Car work with multiple car
rental suppliers, allowing us to offer the largest selection of the
best possible rates.
