Default Dayton to Chicago 1 way

Due to naughty airlines changing schedules an itinerary I had put
togther that included a leg from Dayton Ohio to Chicago in August got
screwed up. Anyone got some novel ideas (no horseback please) on a
good cheap way to make that journey on a sunny August Sunday? I am
keeping my eyes on some Expedia.com last minute deals but it's too
early as yet for anything to turn up.

consider driving, even with high gas prices it might be better than
flying

Thanks anyway, but driving is not an option. I am from western canada
and the problem is a missing leg from a multi-city journey. My car
will be 3000 miles away back home and I did into doing one way car
rentals - more than $2,000!

Er... more than $2,000??? I don't know what car rental agency quoted
that to you, but checking http://www.nationalcar.com/ - they quoted an
economy car rental, one-way, from Dayton airpot to Chicago O'Hare, for
one day in mid-August, as being about USD $92 including taxes and fees.
(But doesn't include any extras; that's additional if desired, naturally.)

It's a short drive of about 5 hours or so between Dayton and Chicago, if
you have the time to make that drive.

Alternatively, you have other options such as taking a bus (e.g.
Greyhound), or booking a separate one-way ticket with an airline that
serves both DAY and ORD. The bus would be about twice as slow than
driving for about $35 less. Airplane would be relatively quick but
likely not cheaper.

Huh? Check again. Hertz lists one-way one-day rentals, pick up in
Dayton, drop off in Chicago for a hundred bucks. It's a 6 hour drive
from Dayton to Chicago, and 280 miles which is well under 100 bucks
worth of gas.

Thanks everyone. It was one of the generic travel sites that gave me
such horrendous prices on a one-way rental. I did doublecheck directly
on the rental compny sityes and you were correct: prices were quite
reasonable.
