Default Cheap (but safe) digs in Syracuse?

I haven't lived in Syracuse since my college days, but I may need to
travel there and spend a few days next week. Anyone know if anything is
available in the downtown University/hospitals area that is nice but
doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Note: I'm not looking for an inexpensive
motel off the highway; I will need something more convenient to downtown.
Thanks.

Heard good things about Hawthorne Suites, bad things about Hotel Syracuse.
