Default Independence Air

Atlantic Coast Airlines [ACA] intends to be operating as Independence Air by
about a year from now. They have failed to come to an agreement to continue
operating United Express from IAD and elsewhere. They run a Delta feeder
service as well.

They expect to have 300 departures a day from IAD eventually, about twice
their current number for United. In addition to their present RJs, they
have ordered 25 or 30 Airbuses, some to own, some from leasors, for
transcontinental routes.

MESA is presently trying an unfriendly takeover of ACA. The Airbus order
will make that more difficult. ACA pilots have already agreed to a wage
reduction if MESA does NOT take over ACA.

So what's United going to do?

Mesa has an agreement w/ United to take over the ACA routes if they win the
ACA fight. That may also apply if they lose the fight for ACA.

United wants to reduce the compensation that ACA gets. ACA played chicken
with them. Neither side backed down. ACA seems to feel that they can do
better on their own then with the reduced compensation from UA and w/ the
general uncertainty about UA.
